Summary

William Benson. Criminal barrister. Convicted murderer....

Convicted of murder 16 years ago, William Benson is ostracised by the establishment and his family. Supported by a close-knit group including solicitor Tess de Vere, he's defied them all and opened his own Chambers. Now he faces the case of his life - and the terminal illness of Helen Camberley, who helped him leave his prison life behind.

Jorge Menderez, a doctor from Spain, has been found dead in a deserted warehouse in East London. A troubled man, he'd turned to counsellor Karen Lynwood seeking help. Now Karen's husband, John, is accused of his murder. Who is Menderez, and why did he come to London?

Benson is defending the couple against seemingly impossible odds, while secrets from his own past threaten to overwhelm him....

Critic reviews

"Assured storytelling and highly intriguing moral complexity. I tore through it." (Chris Brookmyre)

"Punchy dialogue and devious plotlines...compelling." (The Times

"The courtroom scenes are brilliant and Benson really comes alive under pressure. Stubborn, fitful and contradictory, he's a highly individualised creation." (Spectator

Satisfying final (?) part of trilogy

Would be five stars but a little longer than it needed to be and Catholic overtones not my pigeon. Overall I'd give the trilogy five though: ingenious legalistic whodunnits, lots of good characters, excellent writing and reading, manages without all the gore that seems necessary to crime novelists

Narration that transports the listener

John Fairfax wraps up a fine story with what seems like many hidden truths. The pace, plot line, occasional repetition that joins the three books, and the distinct voices of the characters are all well crafted. The narration by Daniel Weyman is simply superb. One of the best, and there are many good ones bringing audio books to life, that I have ever listened to on Audible.

A little confusing but still a great listen

I love this series. The characters are wonderful and the idea of the convicted murderer turning into the courtroom maestro is a good one. There is however a tendency for the end portion of the stories to drag on rather and become a little confusing and I think this third one is a little more so. Absolutely brilliantly read by Daniel Weyman this is certainly still one you should listen to but I'd like to see the stories get tightened up just a little.

Best series since PD James

I started listening to these because Daniel Weyman narrates, I enjoyed his treatment of PD James, and I’m not disappointed at all. The four books in this series I’ve listened to are intelligent, interesting, with well rounded characters and gripping plots. I’m hoping there’ll be more books to come.

Excellent twists in the plot

Needs concentration as the story of Benson's effort to be accepted continues. No spoilers, but a satisfactory ending, but with a lingering question mark. Tess and Will's characters are complex and believable, and the story is engaging, challenging and heartrending. Narration is excellent, and Daniel Weyman ensures that his voice enhances and entertains without being intrusive. He enables the listener to 'live' the story. Looking forward to the next book!
