About this listen

Mysterious tech, a devious AI and a couple of scientists in over their heads collide in the latest sci-fi adventure from the number one best-selling author of the Bobiverse series.

Physicist Philip Moray is having a good day. He’s chipping away at his big work project. The lunch in the cafeteria is at least edible. And he’s looking forward to his end-of-the-day drink and a soak in the hot tub.

Then, a strange device turns up in his office. A piece of technology he has never seen before–and shouldn’t even exist.

Suddenly, corpses start turning up, eco-activists go on the attack, random people suffer bizarre symptoms. And every time the authorities get a lead, it traces right back to Philip and his colleague, Celia Hunt.

Then, a mysterious caller contacts Philip–and, suddenly, staying out of jail is the very least of his problems.

Apparently, that hot tub’s going to have to wait.

In typical Taylor style, the story line develops fast and all the clues are there for the inevitable plot twists so you can face palm yourself at the end of the book and go “of course!” Love the little nods to his other novels and characters in the Taylor’averse. Great book.

Typical Dennis E Taylor - just what you want.

Ray Porter as always does a great job, and the story held up its end of it too. Classic Taylor story, great imagination, great relationships and relatable fears and actions.

Fantastic!

I'm a really big fan of Dennis E Taylor's work, and Ray Porter's narration of it all is marvellous. This though was a bit, hm, tricky to get through and I think it's precisely because I'm a big fan of his previous works. It gives me the feeling of a lot of his previous works blended together, notably the starting beats of Roadkill but with older protagonists.

The characters are far too cliche to his style. If you're like me and have read all his books you'll recognise the tropes he likes to use right away. You know, kinda rational and mild mannered nerdy main guy paired with a fiery woman with a scorching ire you and everyone else in the novel fears; I like the dynamic but I think it's overused and a bit overplayed at this point. This meant I found the character's actions rather predictable and, dare I say, almost irritating this time around.

Better luck next time. It's still a decent novel but not his best work. I'll be looking forwards to the next one.

Full of E-Taylor-isms

I love mr Taylor’s books, but struggled a bit with this one. It was clever, but was close to The Bobiverse in style and content. This comparison wasn’t helped by using the same narrator. I can’t discuss the story as that would involve spoilers. Won’t dissuade me from getting the next one, this was enjoyable, entertaining and made me laugh. Recommended, even to Bobiverse addicts like me.

This book gets five stars because compared to most of what you find on Audible, well. It's five stars. But make no mistake, this isn't Bob.

I think Dennis's strength is that he's a very good writer. But he's not as brilliant at coming up with good stories. Bob, was a great story. The kind of idea you hit on once in a life-time.

This is...an okay story, but it's full of holes and it doesn't really feel realistic. That said, it's an entertaining nine hours. Certainly worth the money, but it's nothing special.

Good by Audible standards. Okay by Dennis standard

If you like sci-fi, an excellent narrator, some thoughtful perspectives and a memorable cast of likeable characters, then this book is perfection. The plot (no spoilers) is well paced and often (for me) predictable, but this is an exciting chapter in many character’s lives, not a “who done it”. I would call it outstanding, if it wasn’t for the fact that Dennis and Ray always live up to the expectations. I have yet to find a better combo.
