About this listen

Nursing a broken heart, Robbie Jordan is trading in her life on the West Coast for the rolling hills of Southern Indiana. After paying a visit to her Aunt Adele, she fell in love with the tiny town of South Lick. And when she spots a "for sale" sign on a rundown country store, she decides to snap it up and put her skills as a cook and a carpenter to use.

Everyone in town shows up for the grand reopening of Pans 'n Pancakes, but when the mayor's disagreeable assistant is found dead, Robbie realizes that not all press is good press. With all eyes on her, she'll have to summon her puzzle-solving skills to clear her name, unscramble the town's darkest secrets, and track down a cold-blooded killer - before she's the next to die.

Critic reviews

"Day's series debut provides some quirky characters and red herrings along with the obligatory romantic interest and recipes." ( Kirkus)

I enjoyed this book but it took me awhile to listen too and I don't know why, the story itself was good enough and just what you would expect from a cozy mystery. Handsome men all falling over the main character, a stray pet, home life drama with absentee parent or parents (although this one was slightly unusual), the killer trying to kill the main character and revealing themselves in the process, this book has it all. I liked the characters, well most of then, some need to be a bit nicer but I guess that adds to the drama and make them good suspects. The mystery had plenty of suspects and motives for the murder but Robbie seemed more interested in solving the mystery of who her father was than clearing her name. I did struggle to keep everybody straight especially with all the similar names but I had guessed the killer. I will probably join Robbie in her next case.
Getting her new business up and running has been a struggle. The person throwing the most obstacles in the way was the mayors assistant who everybody seemed to dislike. That is until somebody kills her and tries to frame Robbie. The only way to clear her name and keep herself in business is to solve the murder herself, even if that means looking into her own past.
I liked the narrator. She uses different voices to help the story flow nicely .
