Summary

An amusing Medieval tale on the same wavelength as the highly acclaimed OUTLANDER

Enjoy the complete series now

Being a genius Medical school graduate and a sporty and active girl, Aliya dies suddenly in a car accident... only to find herself reborn in a completely different body in the middle of a half-ruined castle during Medieval times. While confused and dismayed, Aliya realizes she has been given a second chance in life - so she rolls up her sleeves and gets to work on restoring the castle and her new life.

Aliya has an unusual and difficult goal: she is reborn as Countess Lilian; she has to adjust to an unfamiliar world while trying to introduce the everyday conveniences from her familiar modern world. She needs to take care of the collapsing estate of Earton and its inhabitants while living in the past as a disenfranchised woman. Regular robbers and slave-trader attacks won’t leave her in peace, killers and spies, sent by the narcissistic aristocracy, are just waiting for her to show a bit of weakness so that they can strike. On the other hand, there exist a prospect of meeting with her perpetually absent husband whom, by the way, after her rebirth as Countess Lilian, Aliya has never seen.

Her plan is to make the best of her unusual circumstances to make the world better. She is not a girl in trouble waiting for a prince in shining armor - she strives to achieve everything herself.

"First Lessons" is the opening book of the bestselling historical and time travel fantasy "A Medieval Tale" series by Lina J. Potter. The heroine finds herself only at the beginning of a thorny path to progress and happiness. She makes her first steps, building a defense for herself, her new friends, and her rapidly developing business empire - and this is no piece of cake for sure. Despite everything, she has to still go up against the unprogressive and sexist society of the Medieval Ages, with only her knowledge, experience, and strong will on her side. Still, Lilian has to act carefully in order not to draw too much attention to her innovations - she knows she could be praised for her genius, or conversely, accused of witchcraft.

A fun medieval tale with a strong female lead.

A well written medieval tale about a young woman who is transported to another world. After a car accident, Aliya wakes up in the body of a young Countess, and she realizes immidiately she's not in modern day Russia anymore. I fell in love with Aliya/Lilian's character immidiately. She's a strong woman who knows what she wants in life. She quickly takes Lilian's life into her own hands and tries her best to overcome the challenges her new body and place in the world throw at her. Beside Lilian's plot line, there were a couple of others, although they were all intriguing and important for the story, I wish we could have spent a bit more time with Lilian (especially in the first hour of the book).

I enjoyed most of the main characters. The plot - although more of a worldbuilding set-up for the next books - was intriguing. The audiobook is ten hours long, and those hours were never boring (I wish the book had been longer and that's always a positive sign). I hope the next audiobook in the series will be out soon.

It took me a little while to get used to the narrator, but after a half hour or so, I really started to love her voice and narration. I thought the narration was a bit too slow at first, but after a while I got used to it (or maybe she started to speak a bit faster?).

Could not stop listening

Creative storyline that keeps you interested and spell bound. The main character is a talented, strong and humane woman. I like her view of social justice for the vulnerable in the medieval period.

Well written

I enjoyed this book. As it started out I was afraid it would just be another repeat of other novels. Surprisingly- it’s not. I found myself not wanting to stop reading. I even laughed out loud a few times.

Terrific book!

I loved the cohesiveness of the world the author created. The characters unfold as the story progresses. The main character would be a wonderful friend. I’m hooked, I need to see how things go on in this story. I highly recommend this book to readers in search of a new reading adventure.

Great time travel/alternative history!

Unique story with excellent details. Although the reader is not as polished as some, the story is so good that I'm already listening to the 2nd book in the series.

What a great story line.

I have read the first five and when I saw the 6th coming out I decided to go back and revisit the entire series via Audible.

The only fly in the ointment is when the narrator “Tiffany Morgan” who is amazing, goes into a new chapter it’s not easy to realize it. No pause or beep or something to let me know a dialogue with other characters is starting up.

I blame editing!!!

LOVE IT!!!!!!

Interesting story, but...

So I thought the premise of the story was interesting and I couldn't wait to hear it! Then I started listening and the narrator made it impossible for me to enjoy the story. I ended up getting the kindle edition so I could find out what happens without having to listen to the narrators poor performance. I recommend previewing her style prior to purchasing this to make sure you can tolerate her, but the story was good.

It was okay

There were parts that were draggy, and some that was interesting. Nothing that was overly exciting. Probably a day to day type of existence, it might improve with the subplots.

No, thanks.

The narration was hard to deal with. She sounds like a robot who randomly remembers every once in a while that she is supposed to use inflection. And she adds pauses in strange places, ruining the cadence.
I was trying to get past it, hoping that I'd get used to it and be able to immerse in the story, but once the fat-shaming started, I just had to quit.

TERRIBLE!

I couldn't make it past chapter 7. The narrator didn't distinguish characters by her voice and storyline was boring!
