About this listen

'In my book, you will meet a little girl named Viola who ran from her past until she made a life changing decision to stop running forever . . .'

This is my story, from a crumbling apartment in Central Falls, Rhode Island, to the stage in New York City, and beyond. This is the path I took to finding my purpose and my strength, but also to finding my voice in a world that didn't always see me.

As I wrote Finding Me, my eyes were open to the truth of how our stories are often not given close examination. They are bogarted, reinvented to fit into a crazy, competitive, judgmental world. So I wrote this for anyone who is searching for a way to understand and overcome a complicated past, let go of shame, and find acceptance. For anyone who needs reminding that a life worth living can only be born from radical honesty and the courage to shed facades and be...you.

Finding Me is a deep reflection on my past and a promise for my future. My hope is that my story will inspire you to light up your own life with creative expression and rediscover who you were before the world put a label on you.

Critic reviews

A mind-blowing and emotionally honest tale of survival against all odds. (Bernardine Evaristo)
A breathtaking memoir...I was so moved by this book. (Oprah)
It is startlingly honest and, at times, a jaw-dropping read, charting her rise from poverty and abuse to becoming the first African-American to win the triple crown of an Oscar, Emmy and Tony for acting. (BBC News)

It was a slow start for me mostly because of the rawness of the pain in her childhood, I'm uber sensitive and tend to feel just as much as I'm reading.
However, past that, I could relate with the being human, being woman and the ingrained prejudice/hostility we experience on the daily.
The strength we need and must harness not to be subsumed and silenced.
I have a whole new level of respect for actors now, for every one person I see on screen, now I'm thinking
"there are 9 others who are barely getting by" fame is a poor metric for hardwork and effort.
And this could very well translate to other careers as well.
I can't unpack this book totally in the moment, just done listening
But, it is definitely a worthwhile listen, revetting, raw and true.

Powerful, tender, unflinching and inspiring. Hearing the story told by the author herself, in her beautiful voice so full of emotion, really adds so much to this memoir.

Beautifully read, insightful memoir

Simply astonishing and amazing. I’ve had no idea about her background and childhood so this came as quite a brutal discovery. Love her even more now, knowing what she went through and has become.

Wasn’t sure about this book but it is as fabulous as the women that wrote it. I would recommend this without the slightest hesitation.
