Great Author , Poor Narrator
- By Chris on 22-05-19
Summary
I escaped. My name is Flora Dane, and I was kidnapped from a beach on spring break. I spent 472 days with my captor before I was found. I survived. And I've spent the last five years trying to reacquaint myself with the rhythms of my life. But everything is different.
My relationships are fractured. I've had to learn how to protect myself, how to live in this dangerous new world. I'm reckless. I know that there are other predators out there, and I'll do anything to stop them. Now I've killed a man who I suspect may be involved in another girl's disappearance.
Detective D. D. Warren doesn't trust me. She doesn't know whether I am a victim or a vigilante. Sometimes neither do I. But all she needs to know is that I can help. And that I'll put myself in danger again if I need to. Because the only thing that's important is to find her.

Sleazy
I enjoy Lisa Gardner and her lady detective. This one is gripping but you need to know that it is pretty sleazy and sends you off for a shower more than once. The narration is utterly appropriate and easy to get on with.
At times this book becomes a bit confusing in terms of who is who and I did re listen to a few parts.
The story is largely of a woman who has been 'messed up' by having been held hostage. As far as I can work out, she has some affection for her previous captor, in the way of a psychological condition. He sounds ghastly. I'm avoiding a plot spoiler here but she then sets about putting all that to rights as a sort of vigilante. Of course she ends up being held hostage again and the patterns are similar to her past...but why?
Definitely not for young ears. She is abused.
This book has not gone into my top ten list but was not time wasted.

Ridiculous storyline
Started off so well but lost the plot in the middle & the ending is totally unbelievable.
I’ve heard of bad luck but the victim had her share as well as everyone else’s.
Story read very well so I stuck with it but it was hard work.

Ok but slightly predictable and repetitive
Overall I found it ok. The story line was good if a bit easy to predict. What i disn't like was the repetition of the phrase "coffin shaped box" and "wooden box". It seemed to be constantly repeated. I also found the narrator's voice irritating - more of a personal comment I guess but I think I would have enjoyed reading this book more than listening to the audiobook. I normally get through these kind of audiobooks quite quickly but it took me a while to get through this one.
