Summary

A visceral, riveting, no-holds-barred military memoir told from the front line of the war against ISIS with a foreword by Andy McNab.

In the summer of 2014 the world watched in horror as the black flag of ISIS swept all before it. Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq, fell, ISIS proclaimed the caliphate and the horror mounted: from the mass murder, rape and enslavement of the Yazidis to the public beheading of journalists by British jihadis. For Macer Gifford it wasn't enough to ask why more wasn't being done; he knew he had to act. So, he left his job in the city, split from his girlfriend and a few weeks later found himself illegally crossing the border into Syria to join the Kurdish YPG in their fight against the savagery of ISIS.

Macer Gifford became one of longest serving British International Volunteers and one of the only few to be promoted to be a Commander in the YPG. He fought alongside the Kurds (and their Syrian Allies) for three long tours of duty from the dawn of the caliphate all the way to its military defeat in the ruins of Raqqa in 2017, sniping at the final deadly wave of suicide bombers as they burst from the rubble. Along the way, he made - and lost - many friends.

This is the only complete account of the war against the caliphate by the Kurds and the remarkable and often eccentric band of international volunteers who fought alongside them.

Excellent story shame about the narrator

This is a excellent book but the narrator spoiled it for me. Why was he reading so fast, it was if he was trying to get through it as fast as possible.

Unbelievable story

What a great book. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The detail and the friendships formed show that our fighting men are as good today as they have ever been.

Macer the writing and story was superb - the narration not so much.

Excellent Account

A very powerful account of the fight against ISIS by an ordinary person who was anything but ordinary who felt the need to stand up and fight for freedom and decency. Very brave and dedicated man who should be proud of his achievements.

An important history, but an underwhelming listen

Hats off to Macer Gifford. He's done what I - and many others - wish they'd had the courage (or legal clarity) to do. He's fought for what he believed in, and used his story to publicise this very worthy cause. This book isn't a self-aggrandising military memoire, in the style of Bravo Two Zero. It's a plainer and starker account of conflict, owing much more to the likes of A Homage to Catalonia. It's a rare history of a crucial conflict - one where the West's nerve cracked, leading ultimately to the horrors of Aleppo and then Ukraine. I've never been closer to a war, having lost a friend in the fighting - so I really wanted to like this book. But, unfortunately, it's just not a great book - and it's really, really badly narrated. Despite being self-read, the author brings no passion to the narration whatsoever; it sounds like he's reading out of a telephone book while wishing he was somewhere else. Either the rest of his life is enormously more exciting than being in the front line against a superpower-backed despot, or he's just a terrible narrator. Either way, this is one of only a couple of books on Audible where the narration has really got in the way of the work, for me - and I'm usually impervious to what irks other reviewers. If you're interested in the conflict - and you should be - then read it. If you just want to read a good military memoire, try "If I die in a combat zone" - or any one of many other superior works in the genre.

The Stunning Account Of Heroes.

This is a truly remarkable account of men and women from around the world who traveled to join the Kurdish YPG/YPJ in Rojava to fight for something they really believed in.
This story has been somewhat documented on social media over its 3 year course but however, left out the most gripping details such as the horrible conditions these brave soldiers has to endure, the friendships they shared and the frequent loss of said friends lives. Some of the final chapters in particular do a brilliant job of transporting you onto the ground during the battle of Raqqa. Which is where the author most endured many hours and days fighting between life and death.
History is happening all the time, and this book is about a tough set of ordinary people who chose to be on the right side of it no matter what.

Gripping, thoughtful and important

A gripping account of a volunteer in Rojava fighting ISIS but one that is also thoughtful and searingly honest. Cannot recommend it too highly.
