About this listen

When Lydia was a teenager, she made a decision that ruined her family's life. They've spent the last 30 years living with the consequences and doing their best to pretend it never happened.

Lydia's husband, the gorgeous and reliable Mark, and her two teenage children know nothing about that summer back in 1982. And that's the way Lydia wants it to stay. The opportunity to come clean is long gone, and now it's not the lie that matters; it's the betrayal of hiding the truth for so long.

When someone from the past turns up as a parent at the school gates, Lydia feels the life she has worked so hard to build slipping through her fingers. The more desperate she becomes to safeguard her family, the more erratic her behaviour becomes. But when the happiness of her own teenage son, Jamie, hangs in the balance, Lydia is forced to make some impossible decisions. Can she protect him and still keep her own secret - and if she doesn't, will her marriage and family survive?

This was a good listen. The lie in the 1980s by today’s standards is pretty small but could completely understand and empathise as I was a teen then too.

I did enjoy going back to the 80s and all the memories of that era.

The narrators matter of fact voice irritated me at first as there was no real feeling, but after reflection she was narrating a point of view from a part of Lydia’s life which she wanted to be buried and move on. So now fully understood why she was chosen.

It’s certainly easy listening, with some grit as lots of ethical and morals lessons are learnt on the way.

Easy listening but good

A really good story slightly spoiled by to many comparison descriptions but still worth reading

Certainly an easy listen. A well written novel. I found the narrator lacked emotion and tended to be a bit monotone however despite this definitely worth a listen.

Good storyline

I really enjoyed this book, it’s the first Kerry Fisher book I’ve listened too and thought that the plot developed well with secrets coming out till the end. In fact I couldn’t not finish it this evening hence writing this review at 4 am.

Definitely looking forward to more of Kerry’s books.

Great story with great twists.

Loved the story line, the characters and the narrator. I do have some sympathy for Lydia’s mother, she’s an inverted snob in a world where appearance and propriety was everything. Lydia should have got a backbone and stood up to her mother. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Can’t wait for more.

Brilliant book
