Summary

With intelligence and humor, Susan Brownmiller explores the history and unspoken rules of the burden of “feminine perfection.”

What is femininity? How is it measured? What are its demands? How are women meant to dress, look, think, act, feel, and be, according to the mores of society?

Susan Brownmiller offers a witty and often pointed critique of the concept of femininityin contemporary culture and throughout history. She explores the demands placed upon women to fit an established mold, examines female stereotypes, and celebrates the hard-won advances in women’s lifestyle and attire. At once profound, revolutionary, empowering, and entertaining, Femininity challenges the accepted female norm while appreciating the women throughout history who have courageously broken free of its constraints.

Outstanding Book

This book is brilliant. One of the stand out volumes of second wave feminism. Really vivid, engaging, approachable and clear. Only marred slightly by a few pronunciation errors in the performance.

Courage is needed to write this, and read this

She puts herself on the line as well as citing research! Detail and anguish is relentless, made for great travel listening. Impeccable reasoning and substantiation.

Eye opening

A very interesting exploration of the meaning and design of Femininity.
Taking the listener through every aspect of what constructs and enforces the sense of femininity this book will hopefully get you pretty angry and set you off into more feminist texts and learning.
Though many of the reference points are fairly out of date in context with today, the general core of the book is timeless and vital for both genders to understand and begin to unlearn.

Performance is also great quality, with clarity and just enough emotion to keep you listening.
