About this listen

With intelligence and humor, Susan Brownmiller explores the history and unspoken rules of the burden of “feminine perfection.”

What is femininity? How is it measured? What are its demands? How are women meant to dress, look, think, act, feel, and be, according to the mores of society?

Susan Brownmiller offers a witty and often pointed critique of the concept of femininityin contemporary culture and throughout history. She explores the demands placed upon women to fit an established mold, examines female stereotypes, and celebrates the hard-won advances in women’s lifestyle and attire. At once profound, revolutionary, empowering, and entertaining, Femininity challenges the accepted female norm while appreciating the women throughout history who have courageously broken free of its constraints.

I like these types of books. It had a good broad overview on what is femininity.

Very interesting and thought provoking for some x I liked how it linked with their own history x

Science mixed with information

Interesting history in issues of feminism, sweeping coverage from fashion to pay gaps, with a globale take. But the reader sounds like AI, making the book hard to engage with. Like google map directions.

Interesting analysis but reader sounds like Siri

While I do not agree with all of Brownmiller’s views, this book was quite informative. I liked the wide array of topics discussed as this provides a good overview of femininity. Though I believe there’s more power in femininity than Brownmiller gives credit to. That said, her transphobia and the purposeful misgendering of trans people is absolutely not acceptable. I would therefore not recommend this book—despite its otherwise informative content.

This book is brilliant. One of the stand out volumes of second wave feminism. Really vivid, engaging, approachable and clear. Only marred slightly by a few pronunciation errors in the performance.
