Summary

Trouble always comes to those who court it. Rose Gardner's ability to see glimpses of the future has gotten her into hot water time and again, but so have her curiosity and her sense of daring. Those very qualities helped her defeat the most powerful man in Arkansas - a man so adept at hiding his crimes there was no way to defeat him inside of the law - but her success came at a steep personal price. Now she's throwing herself into her landscaping business, trying to live a life that's as orderly as one of her gardens.

Rose's best friend, Neely Kate, is struggling with her own losses, so when she suggests they help a local man find a missing necklace, Rose agrees. It'll give both of them a welcome distraction, and besides, it's a simple investigation. What harm could befall them? But things that should be simple rarely are. In seeking out the necklace, Rose and Neely Kate find themselves in the thick of a power struggle in the Fenton County underworld, one that could dethrone Rose's friend James Malcolm, the surprisingly moral king.

The last thing Rose should do is court more trouble, but she's not the type to step away from a friend in need - and she's also not so sure she wants an orderly life.

Enjoyable

If you like Denise Grover Swank or Shannon McMannus then you will definitely enjoy this. My only teeny, tiny criticism, is that I wasn't too keen on the "voice" for Neely Kate. That is personal preference though I imagine.

Don't read if you must know back stories

It's book 1 in the series, but apparently these characters have been in her earlier books. The story was good and entertaining, but I felt there were lots of holes because we'd be given a tidbit of a story about the past but never the whole thing. It was a little frustrating to me. Other people may not have this issue. Plus the story continues in the next book. I can't decide if I will read the next one, search for the old ones or just drop it.

Love this new series!

I was so happy all the main characters from Rose Gardner mysteries are included in the new series. I really hope Rose and James continue to get closer. I am also happy for Jed and NK. I have read all the books on kindle but enjoy listening while in the car

Amazing!!!

I absolutely loved this book. I listened to it in just 2 days. I was on the edge of my seat and waiting for what's next. I can't wait for the next in the series. Denise set it up perfectly for many more stories to come. I love a book with a strong female character and this one has 2!

Not up to other works

I started reading this based on some fun and very enjoyable other books by the same author. It started out good, but then just got stupid. Returning.

Family Jewels

This book took an unexpected turn for me. One of the main characters developed a character trait of conjuring up visions to help her solve mysteries. At first she said that the visions came involuntarily, but then she started to bring them on herself when she needed one to help her out. This is not my genre. This story line may not affect others as it did me.

Nothing is as it seems

Loved how Rose and Neelie Kate got involved with yet another PI adventure. They make an ordinary day full of twists and turns.

Family Jewels

Rose and Neely Kate take on a whole new adventure in this book that will have you truly wondering.. who took the necklace and why is it so important? Twists and turns, utter betrayals, and an intensified plot make this a book so good (and I mean sooo good), you won’t be able to put down. Family jewels take on multiple meanings in this new Rose Gardner book and it’s not all just sparkle and shine. Never a dull moment with Denise Grover Swank!

This is the first in Series?

Typical... good girl / bad boy. What isn't typical however is... the back stories seem to be more interesting than the current story. This was advertised as the first book in the series, but throughout the entire book, she keeps referring to past cases or events that seem WAY more interesting than this story. I probably won't continue this series, although I really wanted to like it. It seems too YA for me... young girls doing dumb things and thinking they are all that. I say Grow up, drop the Hill Billy Mafia, and settle down with the wonderful stable veterinarian.

okay----BUT!

I really wanted to like this book---BUT, very predictable, and too much wasted time going back and forth & back and forth. It is a run around novel---it keeps you busy going nowhere. I told myself it would get better--But this is going all over. Lead characters seem good and the premise of the story is good. For me it's just too much to keep listening to. Shannon McManus is a good narrator.
