Summary

When an aristocratic old lady is brutally murdered in her country home the night before 9/11, it takes all the resources of the FBI and Interpol to work out the connection between her and the possible motive for her death - a priceless Van Gogh painting.

It's a young woman in the North Tower when the first plane crashed into the building who has the courage and determination to take on both sides of the law and avenge the old lady's death. Anna Petrescu is missing, presumed dead, after 9/11 and she uses her new status to escape from America, only to be pursued across the world from Toronto to London, to Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Bucharest, but it is only when she returns to New York that the mystery unfolds. Why are so many people willing to risk their own lives and others' to own the Van Gogh Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear?

What a joy!

Masterful descriptions bringing each of the countries alive. Lorelei King's voice is pure pleasure to listen to. As an extremely picky accent/dialect self-styled judge I thought that this was one of 'the best ever' mixtures of American and English with perhaps two inaccurate Americanised Englsh pronunciations in the whole book - together with the inevitable

Had to keep listening at expense of housework etc!

Did not like the American voice which was too much of the same pitch. The story had an incredibly complicated plot and was clever as usual with this author.

Did archer really write this rubbish?

Ih ad to listen to the end to be convinced that the author - i should say the brilliant author - of The Clifton Chronicles - could bring himself to be associated with this this nonsense. He should fire his unworthy ghost writer, as I am quite sure that he could not have penned it himself. It is not worthy of him

gripping

I loved this book, I really enjoyed the Clifton chronicles and the style of writing. this is no different equally compelling and I found myself grabbing every chance to get the audible on to continue the story.

Not quite as good as his other books

I loved the Clifton Diaries and couldn't put Prisoner of Birth down! In comparison this one is a slow starter but gets gripping before half way. a good listen but not his best work in my opinion.

Love the story teller, Mr Archer, but...

I love these books, but I really struggled with the voice of this actress. All the male voices are the same as are all the female voices; they’re indiscernible. The only way you know who’s talking is when the author writes “Said Jack”.

Excellent.

From start to finish, I feel sad it’s ended. Can’t wait to start the next one.

Under par

This was a disappointing listen, very obvious, telegraphed story, with minimal engaging plot. I would expect better from the master story teller.
