Summary

Escape to hills high above the French Riviera with international best-selling author Jennifer Bohnet.

After tragically losing her husband, Nicola Jacques and her teenage son, Oliver, relocate to his father’s family's Olive Farm in the hills above the French Riviera. Due to a family feud, Oliver has never known his fathers’ side of the family, and Grandpapa Henri is intent that Oliver will take over the reins of the ancestral farm and his rightful inheritance. Determined to keep her independence from a rather controlling grandpapa, Nicola buys a run-down cottage on the edge of the family's Olive Farm and sets to work renovating their new home and providing an income by cultivating the small holding that came with the cottage.

As the summer months roll by, Nicola and Oliver begin to settle happily into their new way of life with the help of aunts Josephine and Odette, Henri’s twin sisters and local property developer Gilles Bongars. But the arrival of some unexpected news, and guests at the farm, force Nicole and Aunt Josephine to assess what and where their futures lie.

Beware dodgy French accents

Not a bad story but a bit contrived to make neat tying up of odds & ends. Narration was wrecked by appalling faux French accents & unrealistic voices.

Good story

I enjoyed the story. I found the narration at times distraction because of the possible lisp of the narrator. She captures the story well and I did not have a problem with her French or representation of Olivier, however saying sh instead of s (was pronounced as wash etc and sometimes even at the start of the word) was unpleasant. Quite interesting someone with this problem is given the job of narrating an audio book.

I tried a sample of another book by the same author, read by the same narrator. Friends is pronounced as friendshz. I am afraid I shall have to skip audiobooks of the author unless read by somebody else.

Loved it

I can’t agree with the other reviews. I loved it and disappointed when it ended. Great story and I loved all the characters. I genuinely did not want it to end.

Couldn't Finish

Sadly the Narrator totally ruined this book for me, her over the top French accent was ridiculous and the son in the story was made to sound 50 not a teen

Too distracted by the accents

I probably didn’t give the story a fair chance as I was too distracted by the unnecessarily strong fake French accents and couldn’t listen to any more than 5 chapters.

Nice easy listen.

When I started I wasn't sure if I would like it , but it hooked me in. It's a gentle and easy to listen to book, and I've already bought two more by this author , as I've become a little addicted to her tales from France . The characters were believable, and it wasn't far fetched. It didn't bring any shocks , bit sad towards the end . All in all I thought it was a nice way to pass the time while I worked. The narrator suited it , only gripe is she keeps going up at the end of words as if she's asking a question. But didn't spoil it .

Proper resilience

Every time I listen to that narrator it really annoys me because she breaks up sentences with different tones that aren’t necessary.

Enjoyable enough

A cosy story, I didn’t have much of a problem with the narrator like others, but I can see that it could be annoying and distracting, I just wrapped myself up in the evolving yarn and found it to be a good listen.

Couldn't stay the accent!

I stuck with it for a couple of chapters but the awful French accent the narrator put on really made me cringe. If it wasn't for the accent, I think I would have enjoyed the story.
