It was supposed to be just another quiet evening. But some things just cannot be laid to rest.

Retired detective Michael Jakes is taking a much-needed vacation in a hotel he always wanted to visit. But when a body turns up and startles the guests, he wants no part of it. That is until a woman sits next to him and lures him in.

I really enjoyed not only the story but the narration on this audio about a retired PI who gets cursed to investigate a case and it’s a race against time for him to find the person responsible before he dies. Great introduction to this series of books.

This is an excellent short listen. I've not listened to any of Roberto's books before but will certainly be looking for more. An ex detective wants a peaceful holiday until a body lands close to him, did he jump or was he pushed? A strange woman, a strange challenge and our hero finds himself to be cursed to do something that was once a kind of party trick of his.... Narration was very good and helped bring a good story to life.
I was kindly given a copy of the book by the author and leave this honest review voluntarily.

Excellent.

This was a good short listen to an author and narrator that was new to me. The narration really suited the style of the book and I was taken back in years and engrossed into the story. It really worked.

Our main character is a detective on holiday, looking for a restful stay at a desirable hotel. He has a superstitious quirk of shuffling a deck of cards one-handed before setting it aside and playing cards for money, invariably winning after this trick. He reveals this to a woman he meets in the lobby where a young man has fallen to his death from an upper storey. She makes a bet about how long he can keep shuffling one-handed and then puts a hex on him. He suffers if he makes a mistake, stops shuffling or doesn't pursue the mission she's given him of discovering the killer of the young man. We then follow his exploits in a tight timeline without usual resources and no proper authority to unmask the killer within a few hours. There are multiple suspects to rule out and there is invention and social manipulation in his methods. There is a dramatic, fatal climax with a reversal of fortunes twist at the end. I thought the information revealing the killer was too arcane and niche in knowledge, so a solid four stars rather than five.

The author has narrated several of his other books, but may have ceded this to a different narrator as it calls for a prissy British English accent. This was rendered well initially, but became inconsistent in later discourse.

I received a free copy, and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Long short story exploiting quirks with twists.

This is an easy and fun short listen about a retired detective who comes under a spell to force him to investigate a murder in the hotel he’s staying in. Lots of quirky characters and plenty of dark humour. The narrator’s voice is one I’d associate with this type of story every time.

Fall Where they May gets a solid five stars and I highly recommend this listen.

Many thanks to Roberto Scarlato for a free audio arc of this audiobook.

Perfect narration for a good old-fashioned hard-boiled detective novel with noir humour!
