About this listen

How perfect is too perfect?
Ross Ransome is at the top of his profession; one of the most successful, and certainly one of the richest, plastic surgeons in the business. Such a man would expect his wife to be perfect - and why not? After all, he has spent enough hours in surgery to get her that way. But when his wife falls ill she turns her back on conventional medicine, and her arid marriage, and seeks help from the world of alternative medicine and a charismatic therapist who promises not just medical salvation. For Ransome, this is the ultimate betrayal. It defies logic, and Ross Ransome is a profoundly logical man. Logically, he can see no reason why any man should have his wife when he can't. It's all completely rational...

I have enjoyed Peter James before, and this may well be another good book - but I could not get beyond Chapter 16 due to the almost unbearable voices used by the narrator. Early on I also actually disliked the child due to the voice, as someone else has noted. Chapter 16 tipped me over the edge and I wanted to scream at the narrator, Listening to an audio book is not meant to give you a headache! I may get the paperback to finish the story, but I will be careful to avoid this narrator in future.

Gave up due to narration.

Well written, plenty of suspense and some interesting life mantras hidden between the lines….recommend

Gripping

The basis of the story was quite promising and I enjoyed it to start with. I don't agree with some of the criticisms of the narrator as it's hard for a woman with a fairly high voice to do so many men's voices and she did a good job considering that. However there was too much' romance' for my taste much of which was quite cliched.

Good bones but too much sloppy stuff

I loved the narrator's performance. I dont usually like women narrators but Katie Scarfe was outstanding. She never faulted in her presentation of the different characters and her dramatisation was phenomenal. That tied in with the brilliant writing of Peter James took me on a roller coaster ride of emotions, sometimes gripping me with fear, other times laughing out loud and pulling me along totally immersed in the drama. I've never read or listened to any books by Peter James but hes now going on my wish list in first place.
