Summary

"Part of me would sooner have been a comedian, I just don't have the guts to stand up and do it. But I would love to be in Monty Python rather than the Beatles...." (John Lennon)

Acclaimed biographer Jem Roberts narrates his brilliant new biography of the Beatles and their relationship with comedy. Includes a foreword written and narrated by Kevin Eldon, who also voices George Martin throughout the audiobook.

Fab Fools is the full, hilarious story of how John, Paul, George, and Ringo laughed their way to the toppermost of the poppermost in their classic films, cartoons, and even pantomime, not to mention their experimentations with audio comedy through Sir George Martin's Parlophone comedy classics series. The detailed history brings in every comedy legend of the 1960s and beyond, including George Formby, Ken Dodd, Morecambe and Wise, Cook and Moore, the Goons, Monty Python, the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, the Simpsons, Peter Serafinowicz, Tenacious D, and Richard Curtis and his recent film Yesterday. And of course, no exploration of Beatles comedy would be complete without the first ever full audiobook celebration of the most influential rock and roll spoof in history: The Rutles.

Written with the full support and participation of the late Neil Innes. With thanks to Candy Jar Books.

A thoroughly entertaining new take on an old subject

This was great. After countless books about the Fab Four over the years, I’d assumed that it would be impossible to find a fresh, newly-enlightening angle. But I was wrong. This book succeeds admirably. Looking at The Beatles through the lens of comedy, the author reveals the symbiosis between the two; without British comedy there would have been no Beatles (at least as we knew them) and without the tectonic cultural influence of The Beatles, we’d have missed out on many a comedic hero.

The author narrates and his choice to voice each of the characters is brave and, for the most part works a treat.

For a fans of The Beatles and of British comedy this book is a must; for social historians too.

I enjoyed it immensely.

A veritable surprise

A wonderful linking of two of my favourite things, music and comedy. Just when you thought there couldn't be another Beatles book along comes this one and knocks you on the head and says 'indulge'........ Please please me and take a rut at this.
