Summary

Calder made mistakes. But he never thought he'd pay for them with his life. He quickly learned that dying wasn't what he believed it to be. Somewhere between love and death, there is another world. A world of twisted love, and darkness. FLOAT will hook you from the beginning, and keep you listening right up to an unexpected ending.

Short but great

I loved the twist at the end, and was really pleased the Gates got what he deserved

The narrator was suited to this type of book, and I will be looking out for other books by this author and narrator.

I was given this book in exchange for an honest review

Masterclass in short story writing

Story set up, characters introduced, reader hooked in, tension created through strong narrative and dialogue, breathtakingly strong images portrayed, story builds, twist landed and boom. A masterclass in how to present a 20 minute story, by Michael Bussa.

This short story is focused around five characters, their somewhat dysfunctional relationships and, well, grisly death at sea and afterlife. The most disturbing dialogue, for me, being between mother and son in the preface, as if any mother behaves and talks to her child in such a nasty way, never mind topping herself in front of him, that child is sure to grow up with some psychological problems. No more detail about the story is needed as that will spoil it. It's good and it's scary.

With such a great premise, in honesty, I'd have preferred more story build up. Still a short story so it kept it's punch but perhaps 45/50 minutes to allow characters to develop a little. But that's me being picky and I really like the author's style so want more!

The narrator of the audiobook is brilliant mostly, making characters distinct, helping capture and portray the mood/tone. At times he oddly sounds quite stilted in his reading, over pronouncing words like he's reading to a child, which was off putting. Then moving back into being brilliant again. Anyway a really good, solid 4 on story and narration and a recommendation from me.

I received a review copy of this story from the author via audiobook.boom. I do not personally know the author and have provided an honest review.
