Summary

Extras, the final book in the Uglies series, is set a couple of years after the "mind-rain", a few earth-shattering months in which the whole world woke up. The cure has spread from city to city, and the pretty regime that kept humanity in a state of bubbleheadedness has ended. Boundless human creativity, new technologies, and old dangers have been unleashed upon the world. Culture is splintering, the cities becoming radically different from each other as each makes its own way into this strange and unpredictable future....

One of the features of the new world is that everyone has a "feed", which is basically their own blog/Myspace/TV channel. The ratings of your feed (combined with how much the city interface overhears people talking about you) determines your social status - so everyone knows at all times how famous they are.

As Scott Westerfeld explored the themes of extreme beauty in the first three Uglies books, now he takes on the world's obsession with fame and popularity. And how anyone can be an instant celebrity.

Disappointing compared with the first 3 books

Story wasn't very exciting and the ending was rubbish. Should have stopped at book 3.

Was this really from the same author???

I really enjoyed the first 3 books this sounded like it was written by a tween. It kept repeating the same tired slang. It was boredom -making!!!!
The actress had 2 voices, female and lower.
It took will power to make it to the end. Really, you should have stopped at the 3rd book.

loved the overall story Uglies to Extras

loved the story as a whole, all four together. I didn't like the performance as much in this one as in the other three, but still pretty good. I liked the first three the most, but this was still good and gave a little more closure.

Ending felt forced

I loved this series and got though all the books so quickly so I couldn’t wait to read this one. The story took a bit to get into but I ended up enjoying the twist. However the ending felt very forced like the author forgot they needed to introduce tally and it felt forced for the last few chapters

What I would give for zero stars right now

This one is just a money spinner. The story should have finished with the third book. Oh who am I kidding? It should have finished on the editors table at book 1. But I am one of those people that once I have a book I cannot not finish it. So I finished this series to predictable results. Ugh! I was so glad when they were over. What horrible books and horrible premise. The writing is tedious at best and turgid at worst. The premise is laughable and the societies described totally unbelievable.

Narrator needs work, but story got better and better

The story was set 3 years ahead of Specials and a different character’s perspective. Great story development. A little slow at times. Narrator didn’t emphasize scenes correctly. Hard to picture a tense, energetic moment in the story when the narrator is talking in a monotone voice. I also think this story was supposed to be in a Japanese accent which was totally missing.

Underwhelmed

I love the Uglies series, but this book disappointed me. While the story of Aya's city and its reputation economy was interesting, I felt the plot wanted to achieve too much in the space of one book. I was excited to see the return of a certain beloved character, but she had changed too much to be believable in the course of three years. The Sly Girls characters served to help set up the story, but became almost irrelevant as the book progressed. And, as much as I tried, I couldn't like Aya-- throughout the book she's too shallow, too selfish, with very few redeeming moments.

Not as good as Uglies...

I didn't enjoy this as much as Uglies Pretties Specials. I was disappointed that the same voice actor was not used as well.

sadly, not as good

I absolutely loved the first three books in the series to a point where I just couldn't put it down! Extras was just not a book that kept my interest and it was like a chore to read.
I do want to thank Scott Westerfeld for the beautiful adventure I found in the other three!
