Story
In Free to Learn, developmental psychologist Peter Gray argues that our children, if free to pursue their own interests through play, will not only learn all they need to know but will do so with energy and passion. Children come into this world burning to learn, equipped with the curiosity, playfulness, and sociability to direct their own education. Yet we have squelched such instincts in a school model originally developed to indoctrinate, not to promote intellectual growth.

Story
Discipline is a vital part of child-rearing, but many parents misunderstand how to use it and attempt to control their child's behaviour via a combination of punishment and motivation. Yet while this traditional approach may appear to produce quick results, it can potentially damage the child and, in the long term, leave parents with a far worse problem than they had initially. The Gentle Discipline Book analyses common discipline techniques and explains why so many are ineffective.

The most important book I've ever read.
Second listen January 2022
'Extraordinary Parenting' is such a treasure trove of brilliant, down-to-earth and extremely practical advice on not only homeschooling but parenting in general. After listening to the book for the first time, I made lots of changes to our home and our daily rhythm, used lots of the activity ideas from Eloise, and - most importantly - finally stopped feeling guilty about needing and making time for myself and my interests. After now listening for the second time, I am inspired to make even further changes in our home and dive into slightly bigger learning projects.
I feel so grateful I found this book. I dare say that any parent of children of any age will find this extremely helpful. (The book also talks a lot about teenagers and how to best support them and continue building strong relationship with them whether they are homeschooled or not.)
First listen October 2021
Inspiring, extremely practical, and down-to-earth, this is the most important book I have ever read. Eloise Rickman completely changed how I parent and how I understand and approach the daily challenges, big and small, that come with raising a child. This book has also helped me figure out how to take the best care of myself, however impossible time-wise it seems most days. Finally, and most importantly, 'Extraordinary Parenting' inspired me to rethink what it means to be a good mum, how I can be the best mum to my amazing son, and what kind of childhood I want him to enjoy.
I'd recommend this book to every single parent, regardless of the age of their children. 'Extraordinary Parenting' offers incredibly helpful, practical, and down-to-earth advice on parenting kids of all ages, from babies to teens. I wish I'd read this book when I was pregnant, but, as Eloise says in the book, it's never too late - the best time to start is now.
