Story
Welcome to Chapel Croft. For Rev Jack Brooks and teenage daughter Flo it's supposed to be a fresh start. New job, new home. But, as Jack knows, the past isn't easily forgotten. And in a close-knit community where the residents seem as proud as they are haunted by Chapel Croft's history, Jack must tread carefully. Ancient superstitions as well as a mistrust of outsiders will be hard to overcome.

Story
He is her husband. She is his captive. Her husband calls her Jane. That is not her name. She lives in a small farm cottage, surrounded by vast, open fields. Everywhere she looks, there is space. But she is trapped. No one knows how she got to the UK: no one knows she is there. Visitors rarely come to the farm; if they do, she is never seen. Her husband records her every movement during the day. If he doesn't like what he sees, she is punished. For a long time, escape seemed impossible. But now, something has changed. She has a reason to live and a reason to fight.

“The dead can't speak to us,” Professor Madoc had said. But that was a lie. Sometimes, only an outsider can get to the truth. Patrick had been on the outside all his life. Thoughtful, but different, infuriating even to his own mother, his life changes when he follows an obsession with death to study anatomy at university. When he uncovers a crime that everybody else was too close to see, he proves finally that he has been right all along: Nothing is exactly as it seems. It's the summer of 1959, and the well-trimmed lawns of Sunnylakes, California, wilt under the sun. At some point during the long, long afternoon, Joyce Haney, wife, mother, vanishes from her home, leaving behind two terrified toddlers and a bloodstain on the kitchen floor. A beguiling, deeply atmospheric debut novel from the cracked heart of the American Dream, The Long, Long Afternoon is at once a gripping mystery and an intoxicating vision of the ways in which women everywhere are diminished, silenced and ultimately under-estimated.

My name is Nat Davy. Perhaps you’ve heard of me? There was a time when people up and down the land knew my name, though they only ever knew half the story. The year of 1625, it was, when a single shilling changed my life. That shilling got me taken off to London, where they hid me in a pie, of all things, so I could be given as a gift to the new queen of England.

Fantastic
I feel like I’ve waited a long time for another Belinda Bauer novel but this was definitely worth the wait. And such a treat to have Tim McInnerny reading! A bit of a twisty tale this one, with the usual array of nicely drawn characters- some familiar & some new.

Very entertaining with gentle humour.
I loved this. It's a gently meandering 'You'll probably guess Whodunnit' after one or two false starts. The characters are (mostly) extremely likeable and easy to follow. The unlikeable characters are more like cartoon bad guys and any violence is of the "KERPOW!" style and heavily moderated with humour.
The writing is excellent, as is the narration - the two are perfectly matched. The narrator differentiates well between the characters and avoids the 'forced' unnatural effect of many narrators.
You won't laugh out loud but I think you'll smile and chuckle a fair bit and really rout for the 'goodies'.
