Summary

Kamau and Melissa’s love was real. But so was her grandfather’s prejudice. In this funny, moving essay, W. Kamau Bell, the host of CNN’s United Shades of America, shares his very personal story of culture clash, family tradition, and racial bias.

When the black comedian first meets the beloved Sicilian grandfather of his Italian American girlfriend, Melissa, the wrong sparks fly. The most important member of her large family shuns Kamau. What follows is a bracing, true account of conflict and patience, in-laws and family heirlooms, as Melissa and Kamau deal with cold shoulders, rejection, and finally resolution.

Everybody Loves Kamau! is part of The Real Thing, a collection of moving, hilarious, and big-hearted essays on the modern realities of friendship, romance, commitment, and love. Each story can be listened to in a single sitting.

SO worth your time!

I really like Kamau Bell from his show on CNN. To hear his real, and somehow also very funny at times, experience with being accepted into his wife’s family was fantastic. I feel that this is a one-off, I will look to see if there are more episodes, but if not, this should be a series.

A wonderful, uplifting story!

I loved this story! It was a bright patch in the dark world today about how people can overcome the racism they are taught.

Seriously, who doesn’t love Kamau?

This is the second audiobook of Mr. Bell’s that I’ve listened to. It’s a short story but a great story. A story that everyone can relate to. If Mr. Bell wasn’t narrating though, I can’t so for certain that I would have checked out the audiobook.

A light fun personal essay about fitting in

This was a free book and I was in the mood for something light and short. The story mostly focuses on the author's relationship with his wife's father and how he never felt like he quite fit in due to his being black and the only interracial relationship in the large family. It's heartwarming and very relatable to anyone who feels like they don't quite fit in with the group regardless of the reason.

Quick, enjoyable, enlightening...

What a fantastic listen; the author has a unique voice, an interesting perspective, and a fabulous delivery. The story doesn't follow the expected beats, and is all the better for it. Highly recommended...
