About this listen
In the kingdom of Magus, war and winter reign.
A Court of Mist and Fury meets Shadow and Bone in this dark fantasy romance sequel to Every Dark Shadow, about a realm where the magic-born fight for freedom against the monarchy and the last living Descendant of her god line faces an alliance with the villainous Darkwielder to save them. Perfect for fans of fantasy books like One Dark Window and A Game of Thrones, as well as those who love epic fantasy worlds filled with secrets, bargains, and betrayal.
In the Kingdom of Magus, Ophelia Dannan’s magic has reawakened, but at dire costs. Though she’s inherited the powers of a goddess, she’s haunted by the events in Wythe and the desperate choices she made to save the lives of her people.
As war breaks out, she and Falcon lick their wounds in the Underbelly, waiting for word on Hart and Rune. There, Ophelia plots to end the centuries-old battle for the throne by unearthing and destroying three elusive primordial relics—but she isn’t the only one who seeks them. If the Gray King retrieves the instruments first, the magic-born will rot in endless servitude, and if the relics fall into the Darkwielder’s hands, his vengeance may obliterate every mortal.
To save Magus from ruin, Ophelia finds herself making a bargain with a dangerous enemy—one that plunges her into a harrowing game of trust, politics, and dark secrets. To win, she’ll have to master her horrifying magic, mend her shattered soul, and decide how far she’ll go to shape her fate—or she and her kingdom will be destined for destruction.
In a war between gods and monarchs, one will rise.

I went in thinking I’d learned my lesson. That after book one’s slow-burn tension, relentless plot twists, and emotional shrapnel, I’d be prepared. I wasn’t. Not even close. This book had me on the edge of my seat flipping pages like the might somehow save me. It didn’t and I loved every second of bing emotionally obliterated.
Ophelia. I still adore her. She’s resilient, constantly learning, and somehow managing to hold her ground in a world that keeps shifting beneath her. She’s navigating situations that rely so heavily on her, grappling with her powers, trying to protect the MMCs, attempting to save an entire realm… it’s a lot. And yet, through it all, she stays soft. But that softness doesn’t make her weak, it’s part of what makes her strong. She chooses to care, to trust, even when it hurts. You’re with her every step of the way, and honestly? Girl, you are doing mighty fine considering the chaos you’re walking through.
And then there’s Hart, Rune, and Falcon. In this book, they’re no longer just protectors, they become something far more vital, far more complicated. We start to truly understand who they are beneath their roles, and watching each of them evolve was honestly one of the highlights for me. Their histories unfold in a way that feels both seamless and impactful, woven right into the heart of the plot. These aren’t just backstories, they’re revelations that shift everything. Their emotional depth, their loyalties, their pain, it all adds so much weight to the story. As their relationships shift, so does our understanding of how each of them fits into this growing web of power, responsibility, and sacrifice. Every chapter with them felt purposeful, and every arc made the entire story feel that much bigger, deeper, and more alive.
I said it once and I will repeat it louder this time. I LOVE FALCON. To me, he is endgame.
The world itself becomes even more layered, more political, more dangerous, and far more connected than it first appeared. We’re finally seeing the ripple effects of choices made in book one, and the tension only continues to build. It’s not just magic and danger anymore; it’s legacy, power, and what people will do to hold onto - or break free from- it.
The tension isn’t just in the action, it’s in the reveals, the pivots, and those little moments that change everything when you least expect it. I genuinely found myself staring into space, rereading sentences over and over as if that would somehow give me answers I so desperately seek.
If Book one laid the foundation. Book two builds the kingdom and reveals just how fragile this kingdom can be. Now, here I am, caught in the aftermath, still piecing myself together and counting down the days until I can dive back in.
Masterful Storytelling!! What a book!! 5+++ Star
