Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
With her usual warmth and wisdom, best-selling psychotherapist Julia Samuel explores the family: what we inherit and how we can change.
Relationships fundamentally influence our health and happiness - and family is the only relationship that we cannot leave, however much we might like to. But we think too narrowly about the impact of our families on our lives.
Every Family Has a Story sees best-selling psychotherapist Julia Samuel turn from her work with individuals to sessions with a wide variety of families. Diving deep into eight case studies, with her usual storytelling panache and the latest academic research, she analyses a range of common issues including separation, step-relationships, leaving home, trauma and loss. In doing so, she reveals insightfully how deeply we are influenced by our families - including the often underappreciated impact of grandparents and siblings - and offers universally applicable insights into how families can face challenges together. Her 12 touchstones for family wellbeing - from fighting productively to making time for rituals, and from setting boundaries to allowing difference - provide us with the tools to ultimately be better family members ourselves.
Revealing forgiveness and learning amidst trauma and hardship, this is an honest and compassionate meditation on what we inherit and how we can create the families we wish for.

Such a beautiful and valuable contribution
Thank you Julia. I have just finished the book, and will be listening again. Your book offers a fascinating lens into family life. I have taken so much away from these stories.

Every family should listen to this!
Interesting, informative and helpful. I’m grateful to the families who had the courage to take part and I will be taking what I have learnt through them sharing and Julia’s expertise with me in trying to open up communication with my own family.

enlightening
In every story I saw myself, my parents, my grandparents, my children and their children.
It made me see things differently.
My daily challenges and the way I communicate with my dearest and nearest.
I've made mistakes, I can only understand them, which may help them repair.

I found this disappointing, it left me sad at the demise of the stable family unit.

Illuminating moving educational
I will be suggesting this book to a lot of people and gifting to several more. So helpful to me personally and in my work. Very important in this time of great change for the contemporary comments at the end. Thank you Julia for working so hard to share your knowledge and insight for the good of individuals, families and society.

Very insightful
Listened to this book in less then a week. Helped me to set much needed boundaries with my brother and accept just because we are related doesn't mean I have tolerate his judgemental behaviours. I have the right to say no I dont want u in my life anymore.

Wonderful, thought-provoking
An empathically presented range of family situations and, not surprisingly, beautifully read. A really important work.

Struggling to engage with this book
I am very interested in Julia Samuel's work and have listened to many of her podcast. I was therefore expecting this to be a special listen but unfortunately I find the stories quite depressing. I fully appreciate that life is never easy but I was hoping for something more uplifting.
