About this listen

He was content as a soldier; now, unexpectedly, he's an earl.

Can a career soldier, an officer in the British Army with the humble surname of Smith, successfully manage a prosperous earldom he unexpectedly inherits?

Gabriel makes his first mistake when he falls in love with his predecessor's beautiful young widow, Lady Emma Crompton. He faces a second hurdle—he is slowly being poisoned with arsenic. A double mystery unfolds when it comes to light Lady Emma's deceased husband was also suffering from arsenic poisoning.

Is there a curse on the Earls of Farnworth or are there other forces at work that will rob Gabe and Emma of their chance to find true love?

Contains mature themes.

One would think an author writing about earls would do some research on the salutations for wives and daughters. The widow, not being the daughter of an earl, marquis or duke was not entitled to be addressed as Lady Emma. Her honorific was her late husband's title. Her daughter should have been addressed as Lady Patsy and not Miss.
Progeniture is through the male line and all heirs would have the same surname. Baked beans as pub food in England in 1816???
The story is quite good although I guessed the source of the mystery immediately.
I bought the audiobook as I love Cornell Collins and I'll keep it for the same reason.

But I kept trying to work out how he could be the heir. Even a distant cousin must inherit through the male line. I thought maybe his father had adopted another surname but no.
Very distracting.
And too many 20th century slang terms.

A nice story but flawed
