So much potential ... and then it falls to pieces
There was a really good setup to this story. You are transported to an intriguing west country village. There's a 57 year old woman, trying to find new beginnings in life, and a whole village full of people hiding painful stories of their past. And then, at some point in the book, the whole thing breaks down into mush. What looks like a really sweet and promising relationship developed by a 9 year old and the 57 year old, breaks down into mind-melting child-talk and pointless, ridiculous tripe. What a disappointment for a book where there was so much potential for nuance, plot and intrigue. I'm not saying leave out the story with the child, quite the opposite, I believe this provides a really interesting twist to the story. However, when everything disolves into childrens' parties and stupid baby conversations which never seem to end, then you know that you've been dealt a lemon. You feel like telling the author to snap out of it and get your head together.

A Great Read!
This is a very likeable story with all right ingredients. Clare, the main character, is a person you know you’d want for a best friend and you can easily imagine living in the cottage and the village and being part of the trials and tribulations that make the story. Really enjoyable.
