Max Beerbohm (1872-1956)

Sir Henry Maximilian "Max" Beerbohm nació el 24 de agosto de 1872 en Londres. Era hermanastro del actor sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, muy famoso en la época. Se educó en Oxford, donde ya comenzó a destacar como gran caricaturista. Integrante del grupo formado por Oscar Wilde, Robert Ross y Alfred Douglas. 

Siendo todo un dandi, Beerbohm elaboró sofisticados dibujos y parodias que fueron únicas al plasmar con bondad cualquier actitud pedante, artificial o absurda de sus famosos y bien vestidos contemporáneos. Excepto su única novela, Zuleika Dobson (1911), una sátira sobre la vida universitaria de Oxford, los libros de Beerbohm son en su mayoría recopilaciones de sus artículos en los periódicos y revistas. Se casó con la actriz estadounidense Florence Kahn y se trasladó a vivir en Rapallo (Italia), la mayor parte de su vida. 

En 1939 le concedieron el título de “sir”. Thomas Wolfe, en una carta a unos amigos, escribió sobre él: "Vive silencioso en Rapallo, uno de los lugares más bellos del mundo. Ve a poca gente, se queda sentado en la terraza y pinta un poco, lee un poco, pasea un poco y de vez en cuando escribe un poco. Es vago y se esfuerza en no hacer nada. A pesar de ello ha realizado hermosas cosas y además en gran cantidad."

Max Beerbohm falleció el 20 de mayo de 1956 en Rapallo (Italia)
