Story
First published in 2008, this is a revised and expanded second edition of the author's well-received book on modern Cornish traditional witchcraft. As Gemma Gary says in her new preface, there is no 'set in stone' organised witch tradition in Cornwall, and folk magic practices have always been unique to their individual practitioners. However, in this excellent book she has managed to expertly draw together a workable new tradition from historical sources and the surviving rites, charms, and folk customs of Cornwall and the West Country.

Story
The Black Toad explores potent examples of the folk-ceremonial magical practices and witchcraft of the south-west of England; dealing especially with Devon and the author's homeland of Cornwall. Within the West Country, the popular belief in witchcraft and its attendant charms, magical practices and traditions continued to be observed and survived long after such ways had faded in most other parts of the British Isles. Described within The Black Toad is a collection of some of the fascinating magical practices and lore of the West Country's cunning folk and early modern witches; ways that have survived and evolved within the rarefied Craft of the area's modern day witchcraft practitioners of the old persuasion. As this book affirms, these ways of the Old Craft and Cunning Arte include a belief in and working relationship with the spirit forces of the land, the Faerie, animal and plant lore, as well as the magical use of Psalms to cure or curse, the invocation of Christ and the power of the Holy Trinity. For all those who are interested in learning about the Old Path as it is taught and practised today by West Country witches this book of practical magic and sorcery will be a revelation. As the late Cecil Williamson, founder of the witchcraft museum in Boscastle, North Cornwall and a modern cunning man himself, said and Gemma Gary's excellent book proves - It still goes on today.

Story
Myth is our wild way of telling the truth, of sharing stories that have our living earth speaking through them. There is an old insistence that we each have a twin we know nothing about. A wild, curious twin that was thrown out the window the night we were born, taking much of our energy with them. This story is a quest to find and court our wild twin, for they have something important to tell us. If there was something we were here to do in our few, brief years, we can be sure that the wild twin is holding the key.

Summary
A wise, witchy, and welcoming guide to living life magically.
Mya Spalter has spent years among candles, herbs, cats, and spells as an employee at New York City’s oldest occult shop, Enchantments. Since it would get crowded in there if all of you visited, this audiobook will be your guide to its secrets and stories; in the process, Mya will introduce you to some mystical concepts you can use to build spells and rituals that resonate with your own personal style, including:
- Create and maintain altars: Even people who aren’t spiritually inclined seem to be able to get down with the beneficial function of an altar as a place to model beauty and balance in their lives. It’s aspirational.
- Save your love magic for yourself: Because casting a love spell on someone else is pushy and far too easy to mess up.
- Clean your filthy apartment: Fine, maybe you make your bed every day, but Mya’s talking about the kind of grime you can’t necessarily see.
- Money magic for need, not greed: Hint: It starts with tipping well; it doesn’t pay to be miserly when asking the universe for abundance.
Mya reveals the power of colors (Louboutins wouldn’t have the same status if their soles were lavender), the keys to banishing unfriendly spirits (with cleansing rituals or even a dance party), and invaluable instructions in the timeless arts of astrology, tarot, and finding a parking spot downtown.
Immerse yourself in audiobook and enchant your own life!
Advance praise for Enchantments:
“Hilariously conversational, deceptively deep... Enchantments will blow your mind and make you laugh while imparting expert knowledge of witchcraft and why it’s so needed today.” (Natasha Lyonne, actress and producer)
“Imagine that your best friend, a supremely cool, funny, and irreverent person, is also a witch willing to educate and inspire you toward your own witchy practice with humor, sass, and intelligence. This book is magic - literally!” (Michelle Tea, author of Modern Tarot)
“Part memoir, part recipe book, and part poetry collection, Enchantments lets readers in on the great secret of all witchcraft - that being a witch is about being free to be yourself.” (Dorothea Lasky, author of Milk and cocreator of Astro Poets)
“We can all use more magic in our lives in these trying times, and Enchantments will help us get started.” (Kimya Dawson, singer/songwriter, The Moldy Peaches)

A delight
Heard of this on episode 33 of the WitchWave podcast, in which the author is interviewed (which gives a good picture of what you’re in for, if you want more than the 5 minute sample on audible). The author/narrator sounds like a cross between Scarlett Johansson and Suzy Jackson reading Dory Fantasmagory, which is probably such a specific intersection as to only be meaningful to me, but I mean it as praise. Lots of swears (just a heads up). The only thing that would make this audiobook better is if they labeled the chapters (please do this). Loosely, they are as follows: 1 Alters, 2 Colors, 3 Candles, 4 Plants, 5 Stars, 6 Wheel of the Year, 7 Collaborative Magic, 8 Housekeeping, 9 Attraction Magic, 10 Money, 11 Divination, 12 Astrology

fun read
This is a fun read with a wide overview. It is not for everyone. It's like a friend talking with you about something she's passionate about. My only concern is that there seems to be a bit of cultural appropriation type of stuff, that may lead newbies to try to pick up practices from closed religions.

absolutely fantastic!
I've gone through audibles entire collection of wicca/witchcraft books. this one is by and large my absolute favorite! so much great information, delivered in a hilarious conversational tone. never taking herself too seriously, while also being properly respectful to the craft.
if you're considering buying this one or a different witchy book - CHOOSE THIS ONE! you will not regret it! ofc, the more reading and learning the better :). I'd recommend this over any Scott Cunningham any day.

I listened to it twice....
I really enjoyed this audio book. So much so that I listened to it twice on one long road trip.
Mya obviously respects the Craft without taking it too seriously - or maybe that's the wrong way to say it. She encourages each of us to follow our own path, even if that path isn't rigorously structured. Her performance is great, too, like having a conversation with a friend who wants to tell you about her cool job. She also has a way of mentioning Enchantments often without it feeling like an infomercial (though I will definitely stop by next time I'm in NYC).

I love this book! I found it to be the perfect blend of informative and entertaining. I also appreciated the author’s undogmatic (non-dogmatic?)(meh, you get it) attitude toward magic. The author is also the best performer I’ve ever listened to for an audible book, and I’ve been at this a while.
