About this listen

"Empowered: The Science of Exercise with Type 1 Diabetes" is a comprehensive guide designed to help individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) achieve their exercise goals. Drawing on their experience in clinical research, applied sports science with professional athletes, and innovative technology start-ups, the authors address the unique challenges that T1D presents in exercise metabolism.

Designed for a broad audience—including people living with T1D, their caregivers, healthcare professionals, academics, and sports coaches—this resource demystifies the science behind T1D and exercise. It highlights key challenges such as glycemic instability, fear of hypoglycemia, and the complexities of insulin management during physical activity. The book provides practical insights and management strategies to overcome these barriers, making exercise safer and more effective for those with T1D.

The content is structured to cover essential topics, from the benefits and challenges of exercise to specific strategies for endurance athletes and the potential applications of low-carbohydrate diets. It also explores the impact of T1D on athletic performance and environmental factors influencing glucose management.

Whether you're looking to understand the basics or dive deep into specific areas, "Empowered: The Science of Exercise with Type 1 Diabetes" is an invaluable resource, backed by years of research and collaboration with experts and individuals living with T1D.

This is, without doubt, the most informative book I've seen for those with T1D. Exercise is so important for those of us with T1D, but it is tricky, to say the least. This book provides much needed advice, backed up with the science to explain why. It does therefore get a bit sciency, but this is necessary to fully understand the subjects being conveyed, so I found myself dipping in and out of it, stopping often to understand/remind myself of the biological or medical terms being used. It has given me a much better understanding of the endocrine system and how it affects T1D's (and non-T1D's!) when exercising. Highly recommended.

Essential reading for T1D athletes
