Summary

What is it about the top tech product companies such as Amazon, Apple, Google, Netflix, and Tesla that enables their record of consistent innovation?

Most people think it's because these companies are somehow able to find and attract a level of talent that makes this innovation possible. But the real advantage these companies have is not so much who they hire, but rather how they enable their people to work together to solve hard problems and create extraordinary products.

As legendary Silicon Valley coach - and coach to the founders of several of today's leading tech companies - Bill Campbell said, "Leadership is about recognizing that there's a greatness in everyone, and your job is to create an environment where that greatness can emerge". The goal of Empowered is to provide you, as a leader of product management, product design, or engineering, with everything you'll need to create just such an environment.

A natural companion to the best seller Inspired, Empowered tackles head-on the reason why most companies fail to truly leverage the potential of their people to innovate: product leadership.

last chapter is the whole book

written very well, thoroughly enjoyed. the last chapter basically summarises the whole book. but the information in it is useful to any manager or leader, the methods of application are not explained, its more theoretical but that is not necessarily a bad thing.

Fantastic for product at legacy companies

So thoughtful and practical. Really enhanced my thinking and helped me identify feature teams (rather than empowered product teams)

Where’s the meat?

I feel the title and description are misleading. This book highly focuses on the role of Product Manager, but what really kills this book is that their is no depth. The only advice is to form product teams, be sure you train and coach product managers, be sure the executive suite supports product teams…. The entire book has no specific examples for implementing this advice. No tools or processes to consider. I don’t understand how this book received so many positive reviews.

Must Read for all Product Leaders

This book is a must read/listen for all product leaders. I’m energized to be a better product leader and have the tools to do so. I was delighted to hear Marty as the narrator; it felt like being in a training or seminar with him.

so much repetition that it got boring

This book had some golden nuggets, but it was too repetitive. and if you've read Inspired, moat of the content overlapped with that book so that there were very little anything new. the book would not have lost any of the substance by being 1/4 of the length.

A must-read!

Empowered is a must-read for anyone in Product and Tech, and also for the entire leadership team. I listened to certain parts over and over again because it resonated that much and I wanted the wisdom to really sink in. 👍👍

Great follow-up to Inspired!

Marty does a great job narrating and both he and and Chris knock it out of the park with this book! I can’t wait to apply all of the leadership lessons. For anyone who has read or listened to Inspired, this is a MUST for ongoing product management career development.

Product Managers Read this now

I have a hard cover and audible of this book. I return to it weekly as The team works to change how my company serves our customers. Marty Cagan narration adds to the quality of the book. It feels like a dear friend guiding and coaching you. Confident that you can do hard things and produce outcomes that change how you support your customers.

One of the best Product Books ever

I loved this book because of the clarity of it's insights. I particularly liked the concrete case study he gives about all the theory he explains.

Very good content, sometimes it feels it could have been less words

Some topics/chapters feel like fillers, I understand that the summary is not enough to truly have everyone understand the concepts.
