About this listen

One of Jane Austen's most popular novels. Arrogant, self-willed, and egotistical, Emma is her most unusual heroine.

Emma is a wonderfully witty novel, filled with many comic characters. All the characters are flawed in some way, making them all very real.

Juliet Stevenson's narration is very good. While she doesn't quite "become" the characters as much as narrators of novels I've listened to, she very much understands the motivations and attitudes of each, thereby bringing the novel to life.

Whenever I read Austen I'm struck anew by how contemporary it feels and how well the feelings, dilemmas and concerns of the characters translate into modern life. Austen has long been a favourite author and I've always loved Emma, so I approached a new audiobook version with a little trepidation. This was especially the case because I loved the version that had previously been recorded by Prunella Scales and had thought it impossible to match her characterisation (especially of Miss Bates). However, I need not have worried: Juliet Stephenson's voice is beautiful, clear and measured and her characterisations are excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed her rendition of Miss Bates.

A wonderful book, beautifully performed.

Wonderful storytelling

The narrator did such a wonderful job at narrating the book- the voices were fitting, the emotions were shown. It made it much easier to understand than if I were to read it physically.

Amazing narrator
