Absolutely awful intonation

I had to stop listening after 5 minutes. It was like the reader had been told to pronounce each sentence in the same way regardless of the what she was saying. Ruined one of my favourite books

Robot narration.

This was a mission to get through. I've read the story before, and although it's not the most liked of her novels, I enjoyed it hugely. This, however, was absolutely horrid! The narrator was stilted, monotone and boring. My mother genuinely thought it was a robotic software reading the story. I had to listen to it in small amounts. Shame.

Great book but terrible reading

The person reading it does not seem to understand half of the subtleties of the writing. Delivery a monotone, and such emphasis as there is falls in unnatural places,. This is one of my favourite books and I have tried to listen to it several times but I can't make any headway. One if my early buys but I think I am going to return it as I don't think I will ever finish it.

wonderful book - OK reader

I love Emma it's an ace book. This recording is not the best it comes off as very amateur for the reader to repeat the same sentence 4 or 5 times to make sure its right and hear all the mistakes. It doesn't sound right and makes it more like a free online recording. Personally I found it so annoying it tainted the book l.

lovely story ruined by narration

the narrator did a poor job with this classic. I had to turn off after less than 5 minutes. will look for a better option!

poor story and highly annoying narration

maybe this story was good and had an interesting plot for it's day. most TV soap episodes nowadays are better than this (and I'm no fan). I'm aware this book is a classic, but just being old should not be enough to be highly regarded. in this case it seems that's just what happened.

Performance Needs Editing!

Would you try another book from Jane Austen and/or Jane Leclercq?

I love Jane Austen and have listened to others that were very good. Jane Leclercq is ok, definitely not my favorite.

How could the performance have been better?

There are so very many mistakes here it ruined the listening experience. The amount of line re-readings alone makes this a terrible performance. It is not the narrators fault these weren't edited out, but I wish I would have purchased a more expensive version so I could have actually enjoyed it.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Emma?

None.

Any additional comments?

The narrator uses exactly the same voice for every character. Even though I have read this book many times, it made it difficult to follow.

Bad recording, not edited

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better reader, actually editing it. There were many, many repeated lines and the reading was so rushed that it made me anxious while I listened, not just through parts but the whole book.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The story was typical Jane Austen, who's other books I have thoroughly enjoyed. I don't think it was the story but the presentation. I'm going to look for another recording.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jane Leclercq’s performances?

Definitely not. I have written down her name so that I don't make that mistake again. I am usually a very easy person to please but listening to this book was so painful that I want to warn others.

What character would you cut from Emma?

Doesn't apply

Of course a classic, but poorly read

Any additional comments?

This is one of my favorite Jane Austen novels, but I almost can't stand to listen to this version. The narrator's voice is annoying, she uses the same voice for all of the characters, and the recording is not edited at all, so you will often hear the narrator reading then re-reading the same passage, as if she thought her mistake would be edited out, but it never was. Very poor quality -- I thought Audible had some standards, but perhaps I'm mistaken in that.

Needs Editing!!!

This really needed some editing, the narrator would often repeat lines, at one point she tried a line 3 times then went blah and tried again. At one point the turning of pages was audible, and she would call Mr. Elton Mr. Elliott instead.

Needs editing

Any additional comments?

There were so many instances in which lines were repeated and had not been edited out that it made listening to this very confusing. I am disappointed to have paid for this. This needs editing ASAP.

Always loved the story ...

But the voice of Jane Leclercq (by the middle of the 1st chapter) began to drone into a monotone with no inflection and when she read from male to female dialogue it was impossible to distinguish the changes in characters ... Didn't last into the 4th chapter !!
My fault for NOT listening to the Sample before buying !!!

Terrible editing

This edition of Emma is the worst audiobook I've purchased. It's abysmally edited, with so many repetitions of phrases I lost count, sometimes three or more in a row. Additionally, Jane Leclercq repeatedly mistakenly called Mr Elton Mr Elliott, which made me wonder if she forgot she was reading Emma and thought she was reading Persuasion.
