Emily Dennistoun lives alone with her elderly tyrannical father at Borriston Hall on the Scottish coast. I loved this book, whether that was due to the skill of the narrator or D E Stevenson's writing, I don't know. Her descriptions of nature in all its moods are wonderful, her penetrating and sometimes unsparing and humorous portrayal of human nature, quite masterly. I cannot understand why it never got into print in the 1920 - 1930 when it is thought to have been written. There is a strong Christian element in this book which I believe is a true and insightful reflection of people's faith at the time of writing. In her later books it's much more lightly sketched in. I found the story enthralling, and the writing seemed to have a crystal clear atmosphere to it, like a freshly minted coin.

I would love to be able to read it and would buy it to add to my kindle collection of her books because it is definitely a read again as are most of them.

This is my first real excursion into audio books having been put off them by hearing a sample of one of my favourite Geogette Heyer books read in such a way that I had to forgo reading it until the voice had faded in my mind. Not so this lady. She read beautifully, absolutely beautifully.
