Summary

Random House presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Emily by Val Wood, read by Anne Dover.

Emily was only five years old when she was sent away from her ma and pa and her brother, Joe, to go and live with old Granny Edwards.

A loving and hardworking child, she goes into service when she is 12 at the house of Roger Francis, whose connections with Emily's own family prove to be closer than she could ever have guessed.

Roger's daughter, Deborah, takes a great fancy to Emily, and when Emily has moved to another household in Hull she finds that her new employer's son, Hugo, is to marry Deborah. But Hugo, too, has taken a fancy to Emily and dishonours and then betrays her to such an extent that she is imprisoned, tried and deported to Australia.

But just when her fortunes seem to be at their lowest ebb, Emily is reunited with the one man who can save her from her miserable existence and bring her wealth and happiness.

Riveting.....

Loved every twist and turn of this story, bit mushy at the end but a cracking good yarn beautifully written and narrated.

Loved it - Brilliant

What a wonderful story - the first one I have listened to written by Val Wood but certainly will not be the last and read beautifully by my favourite narrator Anne Dover. I just couldn't stop listening. Life must have been so hard in those days but I was so glad it ended happily. Would have happily given it 6 stars !!

Loved the story. Loved the characters. Loved the maritime link.
Normally love Anne Dover as a narrator but found her voices very similar so you couldn't tell which character was speaking

Wonderful Story

This is a wonderful story, having never read or listened to anything by Valerie Wood, I was quickly engrossed in Emily’s life. How hard people had it back then, we don’t know how lucky we are. Emily was a very engrossing tale and I couldn’t stop listening. I also thought the narrator did a fantastic job. I had tears at the end when Emily was re-united with Sam. I’m definitely going to be listening to more of Valerie Woods books. Outstanding.
