Summary

Audible narration by Jason Isaacs (Star Trek: Discovery)

What will become of our self-destructed planet? The answer shatters all expectations in this subversive speculation from the Hugo Award-winning author of the Broken Earth trilogy.

An explorer returns to gather information from a climate-ravaged Earth that his ancestors, and others among the planet’s finest, fled centuries ago. The mission comes with a warning: a graveyard world awaits him. But so do those left behind - hopeless and unbeautiful wastes of humanity who should have died out eons ago. After all this time, there’s no telling how they’ve devolved. Steel yourself, solider. Get in. Get out. And try not to stare.

N. K. Jemisin’s Emergency Skin is part of Forward, a collection of six stories of the near and far future from out-of-this-world authors. Each piece can be read or listened to in a single thought-provoking sitting.

Absurd, subversive, fun

I really, really enjoyed this short story! It’s hilarious. Using absurdity Jemisin illuminates a hopeful attitude of how we could change our world for the better. I listened to the audio book narrated by Jason Isaacs who is nothing short of brilliant.

NK Jemisin is a genius

The prose on this one was interesting, as you never hear the voice of the protagonist. Like always, the author explores the things we take for granted in our society. It's a good intro into the author's work of you're unfamiliar.

Forward Collection

This was also one of my favorite stories in the entire Forward collection. I like how it was told and I loved the concept of getting rid of those with a sense of entitlement. Very well done.

Blown away!

The amount of inventiveness and detail in this story is staggering. Pride excellence. I want to read the written version because the plot sometimes went too fast for me to catch everything. I will definitely listen to this audiobook again.

Intriguing Plot with a Great Performance

I loved the story, very compelling and very interesting. Of all the stories that are apart of the Forward collection this is the only one that I would like to see some kind of a continuation of. I am not a big Jason Isaac's fan, not because he's not a good actor but mostly because he's not in many movies or tv shows that I am either familiar with or care to watch. I was a big fan of his show Awake, and was saddened by its cancellation. However his performance is fantastic, his portrayal of an IA system faced with a truth it can't accept is perfect. In summation...I loved this story.

Relevant and Novel

First of all, I was delighted to see disabled people centered in part of this. So rare. I love the premise, which is kind of the opposite of the premise in a lot of futuristic fiction: In the future, earth is fine. The point of view was not like anything I've ever read before, and was quite refreshing. And the conclusion was what the planet and humanity needs. Narration was really good, too. I'd definitely be happy to listen to him again. Always looking forward to more from N. K. Jemisin.

One of a kind viewpoint

I really like the characterization. And hearing the internal dialogue the protagonist receives and never his “real voice “ makes for a Truly unique point of view.

It was fine.

Seems like it could be something more. Interesting concept but hard to understand when you’re don’t really experience the voice of the the main character just the person in his head and other externals.
