Elogio da loucura (Moriae Encomium, sive Stultitiae Laus, 1509) foi escrito durante viagem a Inglaterra para uma visita a seu grande amigo Thomas More. Publicado em 1511, foi sem dúvida um dos maiores sucessos editoriais do século XVI e permanece ainda como o livro mais conhecido de Erasmo. Sátira cujos antecedentes encontram-se no estilo de Luciano de Samosata, autor de predileção de Erasmo e More, o Elogio foi, por sua vez, uma influência para Rabelais, Cervantes e Voltaire. Segundo o próprio Erasmo, tratava-se de uma obra moralizante, espelho em chave cômica de seu tratado Manual do soldado cristão, reflexão sobre os ensinamentos cristãos e as práticas diárias que adviriam de sua aceitação como doutrina.
