About this listen

Ellie is a sweet-natured brunette, generous of heart with a sparkling smile and an accent that reveals her East End background. Bonny is beautiful and spoilt, with cascades of blond hair, the brightest pair of blue eyes and a mouth like Cupid's bow. The two girls meet in London at the end of the war when, seduced and abandoned by two American airmen, they pool their wits and resources and set off to make a living on the stage. Amidst hardship and austerity, immersed in the glamour and ruthlessness of life in variety theatre, their story is one of sacrifice, ambition, and friendship against all odds.©1996 Lesley Pearse (P)2007 Isis Publishing Fiction Genre Fiction Historical Fiction Literary Fiction Heartfelt War

Any additional comments?

ellie and bonnie are the main characters in the story. we follow them from the beginning of the war until 1949. both girls are talented in their own way. elle at acting and comedy whilst bonnie is a dancer. theirs is a close friendship that gets the through a lot but it is elle who makes he biggest sacrifice at the end.
well written by lesley pearse and performed by anne dover there was always something happening to keep your attention.

The story starts in 1939 and follows the lives of two girls who are evacuated and then go on to work in theatre. The characters of Ellie and Bonnie are so real that I became totally addicted to the story of their ups and downs and even at the end I wanted more. There is a follow on book but it's not yet on audible.

Just brilliant

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I thought the ending came very abruptly in contrast to the drawn out scenes at the start of the book.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I found it difficult to understand the time scale because the pace of the story varied a lot. So I was surprised near the end to discover Bonnie was only 20 years old, she seemed to have crammed in a lot of wild living

Which character – as performed by Anne Dover – was your favourite?

Ellie's character was my favourite, I like the mix of kindness and strength in a character and the way she got led into trouble by Bonnie. (We all have a friend like that!)

Do you think Ellie needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Probably, the story ended abruptly for Ellie's character, it didn't feel like a satisfying place to stop.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the narrator, Anne Dover. She struck the right balance of guiding you through the story with the voices and accents but she remained unobtrusive on my enjoyment of the story so I hardly notice she was there. Very clever delivery enhanced the story.

An unconventional war time friendship

Loved every minute of this, felt at a loss when it was finished. A brilliant tale

Sad when it finished

The narrator is excellent although her bristol accent needs work!! The story centers around Elie but there are enough characters such as bonnie and her men that keep you interested right the way through. It is a little predictable but there are twists and turns and its a long read so extremely good value for money

solid writing and narration with a good story
