Summary

  • Algunos Emperadores Nuevos
  • Crisis, guerras Civiles y divisiones: El declive lento y doloroso

Fascinating, brilliant characters rise by C.H.

Fascinating, brilliant characters rise and, often quite surprisingly & abruptly, fall over a span of around 70 years, to be replaced continually by the next batch of ambitious, often ruthless, and generally doomed aspirants to power. A must read whether you are big on history or not!

El Imperio Romano [The Roman Empire]

The best history book I have read in years, and I read a lot of history books. Masterfully told for the lay audience, the author entertains while also informing about the folly, turmoil, & violence of the late Roman republic.

A glorious history!

I found this author to be well informed and entertaining. When I say entertaining I mean that he writes in a very lucid and understandable way while capturing the spirit that underlie the offense of the times.

Una Guía Fascinante

Believe me this is the civil war between Gaius Marius and Lucius Cornelius Sulla, a precursor to the devastating civil wars of the 40's and 30's BC. Mike manages to deliver the story in an engaging narrative, while at the same time addressing the various political and social aspects of this familiar-yet-alien Roman culture in a way that even a layman would grasp.

El Imperio Romano.

This is not about Julius Caesar and the rise of Augustus. This period is focused on the chaotic struggles that led the Republic to its ultimate death rattles, from the class conflicts of the Gracchi Brothers, the formation of a professional army under the threats of the Cimbri, Servile Wars and Social Wars.

A top history book in Spanish.

If you are looking for some revolutionary new idea about the late Republic, then you aren't in the right area. If you're looking for an engrossing read to cover one of the most fascinating periods of Roman history, or even if this is your first history about Rome, this is the book to grab for Spanish lovers.

A beginning of the end of the Roman Republic

I am a big fan of Captivating History's "El Imperio Romano". So when I heard Captivating was going to write a book, I was hugely excited, especially since the period he covers is generally underappreciated.
As the author says, everyone with a passing familiarity with Roman history knows at least the outlines of the story of Ceasar, Octavian/Augustus, Crassus, Pompeii & Marc Antony.

History of Rome...

I know the sources from this time period are spotty and sometimes unreliable, but Duncan decides not to focus on this and really just dives into the story and tells it the best way that he can. I also really enjoyed his podcast on the History of Rome

Very readable

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and found it very readable from start to finish. I'm sure history experts might have some critiques about the book, but for me it does a great job of encapsulating this period of Roman history and making it accessible. It really read a little bit like a fiction, dealing with the different personalities and dramas that arose in the Republic of this time

Very good description of the time

I liked the plot and the historical context, but especially the realism in the description of the incorporation of the Goth people to the Roman Empire

Interesting history with romantic flavor.

Interesting history with romantic flavor. The end of the Roman Empire from the a barbarian point of view. You should read it if you enjoy historical novels. I would like to encourage the author to write more to keep us entertained.
