I am glad to have found this educational and practical guide to permaculture. I have long been interested in gardening, but I only recently learned about permaculture–a mindset that focuses not only on environmental sustainability but also on social and economic matters. As author Benz Joe helpfully explains, contrary to what you might think, permaculture gardening does not take too much time or cost too much money. On the contrary, it can be far more efficient than other gardening. My concern before reading this book, however, is that as a city dweller, there is not much I can do. But that myth is debunked too: even gardeners with limited space can engage with permaculture.

One of the things I appreciate about the book is the author’s repeated emphasis on connecting with nature and the environment. As anyone who has spent time in nature knows, all of our senses are engaged. Permaculture asks us to engage in this mindful way fully. This is not to suggest that the book lacks practicality. It speaks to all aspects of permaculture, from understanding your soil and plant partnerships to water conservation, harmonious and natural pest management, implementing 12 design principles, and creating a balanced food forrest (or harmonious ecosystem). All of the chapters are interesting, but I particularly enjoyed the discussion of so-called pests. It changed my perspective.

I had to look 'permaculture' up on the web to find out what it meant (answer; permanent agriculture), so when I downloaded this book it made sense from the get-go. The concept is to reproduce what works in nature already, which is why the third chapter is about observing thriving habitats. I'm about to buy a plot of land to build on, but it will have half an acre of garden, and I'm definitely going to be using the principles in this book to plant it out. Thoroughly recommend.

Really useful book

It serves as a green thumb's guide to sustainable gardening. Chapter 2, "Adopting the Permaculture Mindset," resonated deeply in my gardening journey. The book's exploration of sustainability became a catalyst for rethinking my approach to gardening. Inspired by the permaculture mindset, I revamped my garden layout to embrace more sustainable practices. Like a guiding compass, this chapter led me toward a greener and more eco-friendly gardening approach, influencing not just the garden but also my daily habits. Keaton Erickson's narration is like a soothing breeze through a garden.

As a newbie to permaculture, I have to say this book was quite informative. Very easy to follow and the narration was clear and concise. I thought permaculture was just another type of gardening, but I learned it is a way of life and a mindset. Benz Joe knows what they are talking about and I love that they took the time to go in-depth about this way of life. I also didn't know that this way of life helps with climate change. They go into how permaculture promotes biodiversity within ecosystems, carbon sequestration, and other things. Again, I'm a newbie to this so it may have been obvious to others. I also appreciate the transparency that permaculture does have a learning curve to it but that learning curve is nothing compared to all of the benefits. Truly a great book and I recommend if you are looking into starting the lifestyle of permaculture gardening.
