About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

From internationally bestselling author John Boyne, an inescapably gritty story about one young man whose direction in life takes a vastly different turn than what he expected.

It’s the tabloid sensation of the year: two well-known footballers standing in the dock, charged with sexual assault, a series of vile text messages pointing towards their guilt.

As the trial unfolds, Evan Keogh reflects on the events that have led him to this moment. Since leaving his island home, his life has been a lie on many levels. He’s a talented footballer who wanted to be an artist. A gay man in a sport that rejects diversity. A defendant whose knowledge of what took place on that fateful night threatens more than just his freedom or career.

The jury will deliver a verdict but, before they do, Evan must judge for himself whether the man he has become is the man he wanted to be.

Utterly compelling… powerful and disturbing
New and ambitious… packed with big ideas, moral questions and social commentary

Loved how some of the characters from Water appeared and the island was still a character in the second novel. Powerful and tragic. Stunning narration - so well judged throughout.

Powerful and wonderfully read.

I loved Earth, so was keen to begin this book. It did not disappoint. Boyne’s writing is gripping and addictive, i thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I sometimes find narrators just don’t fit right but the narration for Water and Earth has been absolutely spot on.

Another amazing piece by Boyne!

I loved Water and wondered if the 2nd in the series would live up to it. It almost did - I was a little put off by the lacklustre tone of the narrator after Niamh Cusack’s lively performance of Water - but I was soon gripped by it and tore though this within hours of downloading it. As with Water, Boyne takes on meaty current cultural issues, bringing to it his fine powers of observation.
The narrator was a little limited in his range, sticking to his own Dublin accent for both islanders from Ireland’s west coast, an English barrister and a girl from northern England. I couldn’t distinguish who was who in a conversation between the young Irish protagonist and an African priest. His low key tone grew on me though.

Another gripping story from John Boyne
