Summary

The astounding sequel to Only Killers and Thieves - even in the vast outback, the past can't stay buried for ever.

Death follows Tommy McBride everywhere. Five years ago, his family was murdered; now a freak accident sends him fleeing into the wilderness of the Australian outback with a man lying dead in his wake. But Tommy is haunted by even worse - as children, he and his brother, Billy, witnessed the state-sanctioned massacre of the Kurrong people, and they haven't seen each other since.

When an official enquiry is launched into the massacre, the successful life that Billy has built for himself comes under threat. He desperately needs to find Tommy, long disappeared into the bush. And he's not the only one - ruthless Inspector Noone, the man with perhaps the most to hide, is on Tommy's trail as well.

Critic reviews

"A terrific sequel to one of my favourite novels of the last few years. Highly recommended." (Adrian McKinty, New York Times best-selling author)

"Fast-paced...far from predictable...a complex, sophisticated morality play." (Kirkus Review)

"As searing and savage as the Australian frontier setting.... [A] masterly tale of trauma and retribution." (Publishers Weekly)

Atmospheric chilling historic

Excellent book. Set in tough country against the backdrop of the genocide of the Australian Aboriginals this continues the story of the McBride bothers. Brilliantly performed with some great aussie accents. Loved it.

Transported me back in time

Just as Only Killers and Thieves did, Dust Off the Bones transported me back in time and brought history to life. I’m from the UK but have a deep connection with Queensland - I worked and travelled all over the state in the 90s and loved every minute of it. I have also discovered I have ancestors who settled in North Queensland in the 1880s. By far the best novels I’ve ever listened to. Noone is my favourite fictional villain ever!! I can’t wait for another Paul Howarth audiobook.
