The weekend has disappeared under the spell of another terrific audiobook from Stepen King. Great novel, excellent narrator. But be warned - I was immediately drawn in so tightly that I couldn't concentrate on anything else until I finished. Guaranteed to cheer up a wet weekend - or maybe to put a shiver down the spine even if you are enjoying the sun by the pool.....

What did you like most about Duma Key?

Great story, a typically masterful character study by King. The horror, humor and description are all captivating. As usual, the language and story are spot on. The narration is perfect throughout. I read this in hardback when it came out in 2008, and really enjoyed re-reading via Audible and made me want to re-read more by King (it's a shame we don't get the same breadth of back-catalog as our American brethren, but maybe that will come in time).

An excellent book by Mr King. But for me it was the narrator who completely sold it for me. I listened to this whilst jogging on holiday in Menorca and maybe the peaceful beautiful scenary I was lucky to experience has coloured my opinion of this book, or maybe not! It was simply brilliant. Stephen King returns to 'scarier' topics in this book and I liked that. A must listen.

What did you like most about Duma Key?

Is there anyone left that still doesn't rate King as a serious author. This slow-burner demonstrates his craft perfectly and how far he's come. If I had one criticism it's that it's a tiny bit formulaic in the 'special guy meets another special guy' way and I felt like bits of Dr Sleep slipping in.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Duma Key?

Evocative descriptions of the Bay itself, making me feel like quitting it all and moving somewhere like there.

What does John Slattery bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Amazing reading, perfect, and also very good at accents and differentiating characters. I would definitely seek out of readings by him. On a serious note, I have no idea how you can read 21 hours and not lose your voice!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to this on my commute and then continued at my desk. Highly gripping.
