Summary

Poppy Z. Brite re-imagines the haunted house novel, creating a fresh, sensual, and totally original listening experience.

IT'S A PASSION. IT'S AN ART. IT'S THE ONLY WAY OUT...

In the house on Violin Road he found the bodies of his brother, his mother, and the man who killed them both-his father. From the house on Violin Road, in Missing Mile, North Carolina, Trevor McGee ran for his sanity and his soul, after his famous cartoonist father had exploded inexplicably into murder and suicide. Now Trevor is back.

In the company of a New Orleans computer hacker on the run from the law, Trevor has returned to face the ghosts that still live on Violin Road, to find the demons that drove his father to murder his family-and worse, to spare one of his sons. But as Trevor begins to draw his own cartoon strip, he loses himself in a haze of lines and art and thoughts of the past, the haunting begins. Trevor and his lover plunge into a cyber-maze of cartoons, ghosts, and terror that will lead either to understanding-true understanding-or to a blood-raining repetition of the past.

A Return to Missing Mile

Although not quite a sequel in the truest sense, Drawing Blood's main story arc takes place after the events in Lost Souls and does have minor crossovers between characters. In this novel we see an expansion on the enigma that is Missing Mile and the backstories of the folk who call it home. Once again we are treated to Brite's sensuous prose as the glistening narrative explores the classic haunted house as a central motif. Ultimately, if you enjoyed Brite's first novel then you won't be disappointed in this one.

Matt Godfrey's narration is excellent and emotive. Each character is distinctive and the audio quality is clean and crisp.

A glorious vivid nightmare. I truly love this.

I've read this before in paperback. Realised a friend is Lent it to never returned it. Anyway saw it was on audible and thought I'd give it a go. I thought the narrator was really good. he manages to breathe life into each character in such a way that I could pick up a week later mid sentence and tell who's speaking. The emotions of the characters and situations comes through clearly. Great job overall. Now the story. I wasn't joking calling it a vivid nightmare. The imagery the author has used and the way they've described situations, sounds and tastes; at times had me walking down the street face twisted in disgust or bursting out into surprised laughter in the middle of a crowd. You can read this as a horror though it's more of a creep factor; or as something psychological. Honestly I'm just convinced the two main characters are just incredible disturbed but wonderfully vibrant human beings. I would honestly suggest anyone give this a try and to stick with it for at least 5 chapters to help you get a feel for the characters. Definitely worth it. oh, I'd say the book is pro LGBTQ but that's not the main focus. Which I really like. I generally don't read stories just for romance etc but in this case it works really well in exploring the psyche of those involved. It's well done that certain people are bi or gay and while there may be some heated scenes it's more presented as just another fact of life. Here be two people and they get along fantastically, who cares what plumbing they have. No one is shouting to the heavens about it in their social circles. Due to the location and time period there is a little negativity thrown at this relationship in the story but again not the main focus and nothing to avoid the book over, it's an unfortunate fact of life when human are involved. All in all a very good novel.

Not just a haunted house!

If you like Southern Gothic, the early 90's, underground comix, computer hacking, haunted houses, New Orleans, cheap and sleazy strip joints, fugitives, love stories, LGBTQ+ themes and lots of marijuana, you're in for a treat!

not brites best

i have read a few of brite's books, but this one didn't do it for me. would be cool for a teenager, but too cringey for an adult. the ending is utterly ridiculous.
