Pepe Rey, hombre de ideas liberales, acude a Orbajosa, pequeña ciudad episcopal castellana, donde piensa casarse con una prima suya, Rosario, matrimonio acordado por su padre, Juan, y por la hermana de éste, la madre de la novia, Perfecta, viuda de Polentinos.
