Summary

The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost. But not all survivors were human. In the dark, militant society that has risen in the aftermath, vampires, once thought to be mythical, have been assimilated and enslaved. Used for blood sport their lives are allowed to continue only for the entertainment of the masses. Reviled as savages, they are destined to serve out their immortal lives in the arena, as gladiators. And there is no greater gladiator than Mira: undefeated, uncompromising... and seemingly unbreakable. When an escape attempt leads Mira into the path of Lucian Stavros, the city's Regent, her destiny is changed forever. Lucian, raised in a culture which both reviles and celebrates the savagery and inhumanity of vampires, finds Mira as intriguing as she is brash. An impulsive decision - to become Mira's patron changes more than just Lucian's perception about vampire kind. The course of his life is altered in ways he could never have predicted - a life that is suddenly as expendable as hers. Can Mira prove to Lucian that all is not as it seems? Can Lucian escape centuries of lies, bloodshed, and propaganda to see the truth? Or will the supreme power of the human overlords destroy them both?

Absolutely Fantastic!

I received a free review copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review. I really enjoyed listening to Dissension and fell in love with the lead character Mira as she is still feisty, her own person and has a wicked sense of humour, even though she has been in captivity as a gladiator for decades. Mira was really brought to life by the narrator, she did a superb job with the other characters and a fantastic finish with the story as a whole. The story was thrilling, filled with action and deception throughout and I cannot wait to find out what happens in book two.

Looking forward to hearing more!

To start off this review I would like to address why I have rated the performance at a 3 star. I love Meghan's voice, and any time she was doing character voices, I was fully wrapped in the story. However, when speaking from the point of view of the narrator, the tone was fairly bland and sounded uninterested. This aside, I really loved this book. A great story taking place in a great world. Love that we get the perspective of the 'monster' for once. A likable main character with understandable motivations and desires. Really looking forward to more.

A Solid Beginning to this new series

I like how this story sets out a different type of human and vampire interaction in a post-apocalyptic setting. The usual settings have become quite drab and although this is fairly short the series has quite a lot of legs in it. The determination and grit shown by the main vampire character helps this along immediately and i like the narration provided as it does suit ( although it does sound very like a certain tv mom) the story. I feel quite a lot of promise for this series although perhaps a little more depth in the initial chapters actions and perhaps more in the gladiatorial arena would have been good. This is not to say that Salidas doesn't make this a believable world and true to their characters personalities just some small bits missing i feel for me means this maybe falls short of the 4.5 star mark. I requested this audio and have decided to leave my thoughts on this for everyone.

Great book

I absolutely loved this book, mainly because I enjoy a story with a strong female protagonist and to feature vampires in a dystopian future and as the suppressed party is a nice twist to this kind of fiction. In the aftermath of the end of the World the survivors, humans and vampires have to work together, but soon humans use the one weakness (light) to enslave the vampire population and force them to fight as gladiators. Mira a champion vampire gladiator relies on her strength and skill to survive while constantly seeking a way to escape. Her sardonic wit and hatred for her enslavers often do her more harm than good. An escape attempt leads her to cross paths with Lucian Stavros, the pampered Regent, who is curious about her and her race. He becomes her patron and they slowly begin to develop an understanding of each other and finally have to rely on each other for survival. An inspired interweaving of the supernatural with the futuristic. The narrator was perfect for this story, fluid and well paced reading with clear and concise diction.

Dark and Gritty with Human masters & Vamp slaves

What made the experience of listening to Dissension the most enjoyable?

This isn't your typical dystopian book, and its great to see a different take on this genre. We usually get stories about surviving in times of post apocalyptic hardship in an end of the world scenario. Here however the world has been rebuilt. Instead of vampires and humans getting along together we have humans who have made the vampires their slaves. Brilliant. Humans are still the ultimate predators. A great premise and a good store with all of the characters, no matter how minor, well thought out and described.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mira's character is a strong kick ass Woman/vampire who stands her ground no matter what punishment she may have to endure. I liked the strength and determination of the character.

What about Meghan Kelly’s performance did you like?

I really enjoyed the narration which brought the characters and this world to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

To be honest I really enjoyed the book in its entirety. It's a vampire story with a different take on the vampire/human world. Vampires are not the predators or dominant/superior for once as in this story they have become the prey. Humans are dominant and as always we are capable of good, evil, interest and we can be better or worse than we are raised to be.

Love this series!!

I read this book some time ago, and have just now had the opportunity to listen to this audio book version.
As you read a book, in your mind you add the inflections and accents you would envision the author to have used. In this audio book I felt that I was so way off! Listening to this was as reading a completely different story, a better one than I had imagined. I was laughing so hard at the performance of Olivia. She's such a heifer! To hear that performed so perfectly was amazing!!
Here is also my original review of the story itself-
You always read the stories where the vampires are the top of the chain, alpha in existence... well this series shows how the vampires are now held captive, forced to fight in gladiator matches most often times to the death- all for the fun of humans.
Mira is one of the best- if not the best and she is determined to break free!
She makes an unlikely friend in this book and things get interesting!
It's exactly what you think might happen if the end of the world were to come and the vampires are caught in a bad way!
Get yours TODAY and see what trouble Mira's sassy attitude gets her in!

Defiant And Unbroken

Would you listen to Dissension again? Why?

Yes I would! It was a really fun listen and I really like the series :) A refresher is always good when new books come out.

What other book might you compare Dissension to and why?

I don't compare books to each other.

What does Meghan Kelly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Meghan truly brings out Mira's sardonic wit and feelings of entrapment. Her performance lends real life to all the characters making them all individualized. I am not sure I would have understood the truth desperation involved without her renderings. I will definitely be looking for more of her work and truly hope she continues on with this series :)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Mira is trying to escape and runs across an Elite :)

Any additional comments?

This series must be listened to (or read) in order. The first book is Initiation. This is the second book. I can't wait to listen to Complication!

Mira has been a slave in the Arena for 30 years. Fighting as a Gladiator she is undefeated. Probably the only reason she is still alive. After all she takes nothing from anyone no matter who they are. She has even tried to escape innumerable times... Attacked gaurds... You name it. She will not be meek and accept her Fate! She knows that one of these days she will escape... Or die trying. Will she ever escape? Will she get her friend out with her? Is her determination just a pipe dream? Or will she lose her next fight and be put to death? Why is she so set upon doing the impossible?

Lucian is both shocked and intrigued after meeting Mira. He knows that all he has been raised to believe is wrong just from one short meeting. He feels drawn to Mira and her unbroken indomitable spirit. He needs to keep her safe. Will she help him with his secret plans? Or will his attachment to her be discovered? Will she cause him to lose favor and be removed from power? Will she be the death of them both?

***This series is suitable for mature young adult through adult readers who enjoy post postapocalyptal dystopian supernatural fantasy horror with plenty of action, mystery, intrigue, and adventure with a dash of romance :)

The Annihilation of Vampires!

I I received this audio at no charge from the author/narrator in exchange for an honest and unbiased review through Audiobook Blast.com

I really enjoyed the audio and I'm not going to write too much about it because this is a story that you need to experience for yourself. Author Katie Salidas's take on vampires is different and unique. I love vampire stories and this one is written perfectly. What really surprised me was what the world has become and that vampires are getting locked up. In every story about vampires it's always the vampire being in control and they're always strong but Salidas gives us another take on the world of vampires and humans. I found it funny in a way on humans being in control of all the vampires. i really hope the vampire continues to keep adding each story to Audible and I look forward to the vampires getting free and getting their life back and putting the humans in their place. It's difficult knowing how powerful vampires are and letting humans control them. I'm looking forward to all those vampires getting their life back.

Meghan Kelly did a fantastic job with her telling and her take on Dissension. I thought her voice was clear and soothing. I didn't have any trouble connecting with the story. I found each and every character easy to connect and bond with. Meghan did an outstanding job bringing life into this story. Meghan did a fantastic job with this story. Overall, a give it a perfect 5 star rating!

A Must Read!!

This was ABSOLUTELY AWESOME!! I totally LOVE Mira and ALL her Smart Alecness!! She refuses to believe her life as a slave is ALL she will ever know! She WILL be free ONE DAY, by escaping or death! Either way is OK with her! Then enters Lucian, The Regent! He us enthralled with Mira! He's ALWAYS believed Vampires where savages, but she shows him a different side! They enter into a Ricky frienship, and together will try time change the way Humans treat Vampires!! U can't wait for the next Book!! The Narrator REALLY brings Mira time life!! You can just see her and her attitude since clearly!!

Dissension

Any additional comments?

Dissension was actually a really enjoyable audiobook. There is a strange obsession with ancient Rome—well, really any ancient civilization nestled on the Mediterranean.

Unique new vampire/human world.

What did you love best about Dissension?

K.A. Salidas has a amazing creative way she spins the end of the world and the role the Vampires and Humans play in it.

What other book might you compare Dissension to and why?

I have never read a book from this perspective on Vampires and their relationship to humans. So I can not compare the story to any other book justly.

What about Meghan Kelly’s performance did you like?

Megan Kelly did a fabulous job narrating. You can feel the emotions felt by each character dripping from her words. She makes this story come to life.

Any additional comments?

Good Read and Narration

Dissension was a great new type of read for me. I hadn't read/listened anything by KA Salidas and I was pleasantly surprised with the story and enjoyed it very much. The narrator did a great job and I was impressed with the variations of characters she created within the narration. I will definitely be looking for another book/audible by KA Salidas and more books narrated by Meghan Kelly.

what a concept!

I loved the twists in this book. it is so rare for vampires to be shown suffering not only physically but emotionally. I was hooked on every word. I recommend this for anyone who likes there vampires to have humanity still left in them and action to go with it.

Mira has had enough

What did you love best about Dissension?

Mira and her never give up Attitude!

What other book might you compare Dissension to and why?

None this book was very different.

What does Meghan Kelly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She bring Mira smart comments to life!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it is a fast paced book that you get hooked on easily!

Any additional comments?

I loved Dissension because it was very different from other vampire books I've listen to or read.
This world was about to come to an end but the vampire's came out of hiding to help the humans save our world. That was 30 years ago. Since than in the story line. The humans were terrified of the vampires and caged them all out of fear. The vampires have to fight to the death to survive. The are only feed a minimum amount of blood but only if they are good and fight as their masters command. They have been turned into slaves. Fight slaves and sex slaves, slaves that never know if they will survive one more day.
Mira is the main prized fighter who hasn't given up on earning her freedom. After 30 years in a cage she starts to fight back for her freedom. She is a real fighter in mind, body and sprite. Her smart mouth will make you laugh. It will also upset you. It is easy to see they need to be freed from having to kill each other for sport. When she was beating or put in the light box. I was unhappy with the masters. I could only think, how dare you.
I could easily listen to this book twice. It has you on an emotionally roller coaster from start to finish. The author just grasps you with the unjust treatment of the vampires.

The narrator Meghan Kelly has a perfect voice for Mira that helps you really get the Main character. The smarty comments the Mira says are more emotional for the listener.

I recieved this audio book for a fair review!

I DON'T KILL UNLESS I HAVE TO

DON'T TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY, BUT YOUR A BIT OF AN ASS
I have no problem with a strong female character, matter of fact, I prefer them. I do find it highly unlikely that a back talking, loud mouth, trouble maker would be tolerated as a slave. Her owner and several others have her life in their hands at all times, yet she can not control her mouth. They try to say, because she is a great warrior and makes money for her owner in the gladiator ring, she is able to be as mouthy as she wants. As mouthy as a modern teenager in a modern YA novel. I did not buy it and that ruined the story for me. Also, I believe that silver is a problem for werewolves not vampires.

Anyways, this is a B- story.

YOU'LL HEAR FROM ME, WHEN I NEED YOU
