Summary

In this classic collection of four novellas, the grand master takes you on irresistible journeys into the far reaches of horror, heartache and hope.

'Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption' is the story of two men convicted of murder - one guilty, one innocent - who form the perfect partnership as they dream up a scheme to escape from prison.

In 'Apt Pupil' a golden schoolboy entices an old man with a past to join in a dreadful union.

'The Body' sees four young boys venture into the woods and find life, death...and the end of innocence.

'The Breathing Method' is the tale of a doctor who goes to his club and discovers a woman determined to give birth - no matter what.

One of the Best King Books, top 5 at least

Any additional comments?

What a brilliant selection of stories. Many writers would be happy to have produced just one of these masterpieces in their life time and king comes out with four in one book.
You will know the Shawshank Redemption and the Body as they were extremely popular films (The Body was used as the basis for Stand By Me) All 4 stories are superb and a must for any King fan or someone just wanting to dip their toe into the King back catalogue.

Kings best writing

It’s no surprise that two fantastic films have been produced from stories in this book as the quality of writing is superb.
In this book he showcases his talent for writing straight fiction as good as any contemporary author.

Great value!

Great value of 4 books in one, but would be nicer if each book was labeled so I didn't have to go looking through each chapter trying to find the end of one book and the beginning of the next.

Excellent work Frank

Excellent stories narrated expertly and believably. He was the voice of Red, and Mr Adler. very much in character at all times.

Love these stories, poor sound quality though

These novella's by King are iconic, all but one have been turned into movies.
The Breathing Method is one of the most moving, yet gruesome stories I have ever read.

Top class collection (Mild Spoiler Alert)

Who was your favorite character and why?

Probably Todd from Apt Pupil... such an interesting character, he starts off as this seemingly innocent kid even if he is smart and maybe a little too eager... but we quickly see him as a manipulative bastard, before he descends into this rather horrific character.

What does Frank Muller bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Well damn... can somebody explain what the deal is with Frank Muller?? I've listened to his performances before, and found them sometimes difficult to listen to, often "hammy" and overwrought. Making the whole thing feel a bit to melodramatic, this was particularly true on The Talisman.

But here... what a transformation! Perfectly delivered. The tone and pacing were always on point, the voices were believable, and it just had the "listenable" quality that makes a great audiobook.

Brilliant stories

Loved the stories in this collection. Each one is superb. I can’t pick a favourite as they all have their own strengths. Frank Muller was a wonderful narrator.

My only criticism is I found it frustrating how short the gap between the end of one story and the start of the next was. When I finish a story I think it’s important to take a second to finish digesting what you just heard. Each story follows after a very short pause from the last. I had to pause the story to take some time. If a short 10-15 second bit of simple music was played between it would allow a chance to breath before the next one started without thinking the audiobook had stop playing. A lot of King audiobooks use music for seemingly no reason, it would be useful here.
