Summary
Das Schauspiel "Die Weber" entstand 1892 und wurde ein Jahr später uraufgeführt. Es behandelt die miserable Lage der schlesischen Weber, welche in den 1840er Jahren unter unwürdigen Verhältnissen lebten und von ihren Arbeitgebern ausgebeutet wurden - bis es 1844 zum Aufstand kam. Die revolutionäre Spannung kommt dabei besonders im Weberlied zum Ausdruck.
Gerhart Hauptmann hat die historischen Begebenheiten detailliert recherchiert, bevor er sein soziales Milieudrama schrieb. Es wurde von den Wilhelminischen Zensurbehörden als Kampfstück eingeschätzt und deshalb zeitweise verboten.
