"Die Verwandlung" gehört zu den wenigen Werken, die noch zu Kafkas Lebzeiten veröffentlicht wurden. Sie entstand im November/Dezember 1912 in drei Teilen. Ursprünglich nur eine kleine Idee, für die Kafka die Arbeit am Roman "Der Verschollene" (Amerika) unterbrach, wuchs sie sich schnell zu einer recht umfangreichen Novelle aus. Drei Jahre später erschien die Novelle erstmals in den Weißen Blättern, einen Monat später als Einzeldruck im Kurt Wolff Verlag.
