Summary

Die Tragikomödie "Die Ratten" erschien 1911 und zählt damit zu den späten naturalistischen Stücken Gerhart Hauptmanns. Schauplatz ist eine Mietskaserne in Berlin, wo sich die Schicksale verschiedener Parteien miteinander verweben: Indem die tragische Handlung um Frau John die Lebenswirklichkeit der verwahrlosten Unterschicht zeigt, steht sie im Kontrast zu den Szenen um Harro Hassenreuthers scheinbar intakte bürgerliche Welt. Hauptmann greift in den fünf Akten auf das antike Tragödienmodell zurück. Durch die bedeutende Rolle, die er der Kriminalität einräumt, zeichnet er ein finsteres Bild des Milieus.
