This has been a longstanding ambition: to read ‘Die Blechtrommel’ in the original. I read the Manheim English translation over fifty years ago and knew no German at that time. It made a big impression.

I can read ordinary Krimis in German now without much difficulty but the complexity and invention of Grass is on quite another level. To have the book read to me by the author was simply magical. It has been so worth the time and effort. I finished the last part in Danzig/Gdansk. By design.
One of the reading experiences of my life.
