Summary

REESE'S BOOK CLUB MAY 2023 PICK

A multigenerational saga that traverses the glamour of old Hollywood and the seductive draw of modern-day showbiz

When Kitty Karr Tate, a White icon of the silver screen, dies and bequeaths her multimillion-dollar estate to the St. John sisters, three young, wealthy Black women, it prompts questions. Lots of questions.

A celebrity in her own right, Elise St. John would rather focus on sorting out Kitty’s affairs than deal with the press. But what she discovers in one of Kitty’s journals rocks her world harder than any other brewing scandal could—and between a cheating fiancé and the fallout from a controversial social media post, there are plenty.

The truth behind Kitty's ascent to stardom from her beginnings in the segregated South threatens to expose a web of unexpected family ties, debts owed, and debatable crimes that could, with one pull, unravel the all-American fabric of the St. John sisters and those closest to them.

As Elise digs deeper into Kitty's past, she must also turn the lens upon herself, confronting the gifts and burdens of her own choices and the power that the secrets of the dead hold over the living. Did You Hear About Kitty Karr? is a sprawling thriller set against the backdrop of the Hollywood machine, an insightful and nuanced look at the inheritances of family, race, and gender—and the choices some women make to break free of them.

Stick with it

Honestly, i nearlyquit this book so many times. It took me until chapter 10 to actually feel like I was engaged, but once that happened, I was hooked. I think the story would make a great film, it crosses so many generations and covers a lot of Black American history.

Fantastic

A truly fantastic story which should make us all stop and think. It is well written and well narrated and it should be part of the curriculum. Once I got past the first few chapters I couldn’t stop listening.

Great multi generational story!

This isn't a genre I usually read, so I chose this book to try and push outside of my comfort zone. I'm so pleased I did!

I loved the fact that we got to see the whole story of Kitty Karr, from her roots in the South to her rocket into fame. This book didn't hold anything back and gave us an undiluted picture of the complexities of women passing as white in the 50's and 60's.

The only negative I have is the modern-day parts of the book as I didn't find them essential to the story.

Overall, it was an amazing read that I would recommend everyone try!

Insightful and thought provoking

Insightful look into how being born a woman of colour and how society treats their own. I found this really thought provoking.

I learned so much about how difficult it is to integrate if you have different skin colour

It was a shock to hear that because Kitty wanted a better life , she had to lose all contact with her past

Good narrative - taught me a lot.

I enjoyed the book and the performances were great. The parallel timelines worked very well and the history and the context was very educational. Strong female characters and voices!
