About this listen

An actor is brutally murdered while sitting alone in his fully locked car.

A note arrives claiming responsibility and explaining the man died not for who he was, but for who he pretended to be. He played Dr. Watson in a production of Sherlock Holmes. The note promises to kill everybody in Hollywood currently playing Dr. Watson: a surprisingly long list.

Billionaire Vince Capp sends his crime fighting team, the Authorities, down from Seattle to solve the crime, stop the killer, save lives, and above all else, increase their national profile. But it won't be easy. Detective Sloan will have to wrestle with the most irritating case of her career while two of her key operatives are terribly distracted: Rutherford has found a new role model to follow and emulate, and Max must tangle with a mysterious figure from a past he'd rather forget.

Destructive Reasoning is book two in the Authorities series: a funny, thrilling, confounding mystery in a setting of Hollywood glamor viewed with Seattle ironic detachment.

Puzzling clues will be uncovered!

Shocking truths will be revealed!

Angry bees will be released!

If, like me, you pine for those days when you listened to magic 2.0 books for the first time, you need to listen to these books. Pure comedic silliness. Scott Meyer is a treasure.

If you loved Magic 2.0 you'll love this.

Another happy few hours escaping into one of the author's madcap worlds. It's nice to find a book that is well written and doesn't make you work too hard to enjoy it. Perfect for holing up sick with Covid.

The narration really brought this story to life.

Such fun

Note for anyone finding this and is new to the series: Start with the first book, as all the character introductions and mystique are dealt with in there!

The standout for me with this audiobook is that Luke Daniels works so, so well with Scott Meyer's silly works. He makes them a very fun listen, and has a good variety of consistent voices that are distinct and memorable. I am a big fan of the Magic 2.0 series, and I don't think there are any duplicates here.

I'm glad to see this series continued, with generally good character development throughout. It's not perfect, I don't mesh perfectly with all of Meyer's humour and there are definitely some parts that I would consider a bit too played out, (that being said, part of the humour is that the author/characters are aware - it just wasn't for me) but I certainly enjoyed the listen and I'm sure I'll listen again in future.

TL;DR: An enjoyable if not perfect continuation of a fun and imaginative storyline with excellent memorable narration. Also, there are bloopers included at the end!

A fun story amplified by a fantastic narrator
